I have a 98 tj w/ a Teraflex sye kit and a Tom Woods shorty on it. For the last few months the speedo has stopped working from time to time and the "check engine" light comes on. The speedo works within the next 2-5min, but the warning light stays on for sometimes a day or more. It also idles erratically, and occasionally stalls . I originally thought it was the sensor itself, but now I think it may be a broken wire. After talking to one of the techs at Teraflex I'm wondering if it could also be the tone ring. If anyone can give some insight into this problem I would appreciate it.
If it's that one, it uses the standard speedometer gear and OE housing, it does not have a tone ring.
What normally happens is the speedo housing has not been rotated into the proper position so the speedometer gear inside the housing fully engages the plastic pinion gear (that blue part shown on the Tera SYE page) on the tcase output shaft. Rotating it to the point the speedometer gear fully and consistently engages the plastic pinion gear is the usual fix.
Its the extreme shorty. Not the one in the pic. Thanks for the post. Any more ideas would be welcome. I'm hoping someone has run into this before. Teraflex has the sensor for $100, but if that's not the problem I just blew $100. And replacing the tone ring is cheaper (like $30-$40) but it takes like 4hr according to Teraflex. I think I'd rather spend $100.
I don't think that's an option with the sye and the drive shaft I'm currently using.
