Speedo Waiving Like a Magic Wand

While driving my '97 TJ today, I noticed the speedometer waiving like a magic wand. Once I get the speed up to approximately 20mph, the needle jumps from 20mph to 70-80 mph. Loose speedo cable or worn out gear in the transmission pan. OBTW, I have a 2.5 4cylinder (go hampster power!) Help please

It is most likely your gear but possibly the cable. Its and easy fix for the gear and a bit more work for the cable. The speedo gear is in the transfer case.

Thanks...I hope it is the gear and not the cable. Appreciate the quick response.

TJs do not have cable driven speedometers.

Electric wire is sometimes called cable. Like winch power "cable".

Mine does the same thing! When I put in a sye, it came with a tone ring reader for the speedometer. Idk what to check!

I am jumping on this Topic because it is the closest to my issue. So I have a Rubi so nothing has been done to the trasnfercase becised the new Tom Woods Driveshaft when I lifted it.

My speedo goes 50-60 MPH faster than what I am doing and at the same time my brake lights are not working. Replaced the Spedo sensor and brake petal sensor and still nothing.

It is a LONG shot but I am running out of ideas.
