Speedometer Disconnected..please help

I just recently purchased my first wrangler ('99, auto, 4.0L) the guy I bought it from said he had disconnected the speedometer because of the larger tires making it be off. The speedometer/odometer currently do not work and the check engine light is on. I thought that he had just taken out the speedo gear out. Once I got it home I checked it the speedo gear was still in place and was still connected. I havent been able to contact the previous owner, so I was wondering what do I need to do to get the speedo/ odometer working again.....

Uh oh. That is illegal I think. Check for cut wires, or disconnected at the back of the dash.

Check the manual, should be in there, but I would really try to contact the owner because that's not good if he told you that..

The speedo gear in the T/C can be rotated to allow for different size gears to adjust for tire size and or gears. Check the count on the gear and look on the side of the gear holder and see where it needs to be to let the gears mesh. Sounds to me like he just rotated it to not engage the gear. Hope that helps. That is what I was about to post too, I'd have to guess that is all that is wrong.
