So i'm looking to buy a speedometer gear. Well there are couple of charts i've seen. I have 3.73 gears and 35s. Some charts say i need 29 tooth gear others say i need 31 tooth gear. What is right?

In 4wheel drives catalog (www.4wd.com) it says i need 31 tooth gear.
I just called qtec (yes i know lol) and on their website it says i need 29 tooth gear while when i called, the guy says i need 31 tooth gear. WTF is going on here?

Thanks

That's the 29-tooth gear. Mine Jeep is a '98, has the 4.0L I6 engine, three-speed auto trans, and had 3.07 gears. This is the gear that Trip is getting from me. Since I have gone up to 33" tires I changed to (if I recall correctly) a 36-tooth gear.

sorry i dont wanna hijack but after i installed my 33s i figured my guage was off.. yet i was getting around 15 mpg still.. i thought it would have been considerably less, so i got the handy TOMTOM..(gps) to see how much it was off.. when i was going 60 it said 62.. i have 3.73 w/a manual trans.. when i got the gear 31 spline gear the guy at the dealership said the new one i got could still be off by no more than 3mph because the actual size of the 33s may be off.. so would it even be worth installing since appearantly the jeep is only off by 2mph?? or could my gps be off..

Hey Trip I sent that PM but hold on a day or so to see if I can find out the tooth number I have with stock.I would hate for you to send it to me and I have a 29 tooth stock gear allready and someone else could have used the 30more than me.Allthough if thats the case I could just forward it on also so how ever.If you get around to it just let me know.Later!!!

Yeah If I actually get a chance to get my own vehicle in the shop I will check it.I just put a fan relay on a 2001 Grand Cherokee today and you have to take the whole grille,bumper cover,and both headlights and headlight buckets out just to get to the blasted thing.It sits right behind the passager side headlight but you can't get just the headlight out like most cars they are bolted to the headlight bucket from the inside and the bucket or basket the headlights sits in is a one piece deal that goes all the way across the front to the other headlight.If the headlight came out like most it would have been a 10 min job but nooo.

update.. i installed the 29 tooth gear and of course, gues what? i took a test drive, everything worked great. Next mourning i find a nice puddle of oil on the ground. The original o-ring was way to loose so i guess i pinched it. Anyhow i went to ace hardware and found a replacement. On the package it says

1-11/16 X 1-1/2
X 3/32 #86 ORINO
STK NO 35708B
||||scan code|||
Danco Company
Concordville pa 19331

The cost was like 40 cents :)
