Squeaking noise when turning?

Just recently, my '98 TJ has been making a squeaking noise whenever I turn the wheels. I can't really determine where the noise is coming from. Fluid level is fine for power steering. What could be causing this noise? Anything that may need to be lubricated?

squeaking constantly or just when moving the wheel back and forth? Check the track bar on the axle end, the bushing might be shot or needs tightening up.

Just while moving the wheel back and forth... Would that still be the track bar bushing? Earlier, I propped the hood up and had someone move the wheel while I listened under the hood, and the sound was louder from the drivers seat. No clue if that would be useful info to know or not...

If its louder from the driver seat, it could be in the steering column. All of my Jeeps do it. plastic against plastic. Or some kind of bearing. Usually does it when its cold out.

Yeah...it got coller here in the bluegrass over the last week or so, and now my steering column is squeeking too... the faster i turn the wheel the louder and higher pitched the squeaking gets.

could be many things.. mainly loose belt, worn tensioner, if you have no clue of pin pointing the noise, what makes you think you can fix it.. take it to a shop..

I tried oiling the rubber grommet where the steering wheel goes into the fire wall.. no luck

Maybe i should oil the entire thing even where the grommet meets the metal on the fire wall, not just the center part where the steering shaft goes through it.

Any one know how to "remove" that rubber grommet? (just to see if it stops squeaking)

Anybody ever try a can of white lithium spray grease and spray your whole steering colum while someone turn it back and forth. I think that might work better and last longer than WD. Another thing you might try is hitting all the grease fittings on your front end if you have a grease gun..

MUd707 you beat me to it. I just joined this Forum today. White lithium grease is a great curte all for squeaks, if it only due to rubbing/dryness or chaffinf that is. Before spraying down that grommet on the firewall check it with your hand by squeezing it. See if it feels "broken down" or spongy, it may need to be replaced. Or if it feels solid and tight, spray it, work the steering wheel back and forth and see what happens. With weather changes here in Mass we get lots of cars at my shop that have squeaks and creaks due to the metal components expanding and tightening due to the weather changes. The sttering column shaft may axtually expand and tighten in that grommet/bushing and just need some lube... Good luck

Spray the steering wheel shaft where it passes through the rubber grommet on the fire wall with white lithium grease.
