squeaky front end

Took the jeep out for a night ride last night and headed up to the top of a hill. When I started to head back down I put it in 4L and started down the hill. While it was in 4L there was a pretty loud squeaking sound coming from the driver's side. The only time I could hear the noise was when I was in 4L heading down. I couldn't hear it on flat ground or when I was headed up in 4H. Any thoughts on this?

Were you on the brakes? some times the booster will send out a tone if its built up. I had an anoying squeek on the front end of my jeep for awhile. I would hear it if i hit a bump or was rocking. Turned out it was the metal from the fender (under the dirt shield) rubbing on a tab on my frame, bent that sucker up a hair and she's nice and quiet now! Probably not your problem though, do you have any greater detail?

Nope, I was just in 4L, 1st gear, usin the motor down the hill. But not much more detail other than it was only coming from the driver's side and not the passenger side

can you duplicate by driving in 4Lo?

If not I suspect it has nothing to do with 4Lo....more to do with suspension (for example if dirt gets in the spring seat it can make all sorts of noise) springs are great at making noise.

ya i think i can duplicate it, but only if there is stress, like heading downhill. if i am on flat ground it doesnt make any noise.

also it sounded more like a rotational, consistent noise rather than a irregular noise like a spring would make

Maybe the drive shaft if it sounds rotational. Maybe putting the extra pressure down hill is causing something to rub.

I've had that same squeak myself. I couldn't figure it out for nothing. I checked where you where talking about and sure enough I had the same problem. Thanks for the help! I now have a nice quiet Jeep.

I guess that rules me out, everytime I hit a bump I hear a squeak on the passenger side. Sometimes very loud, and other times it is subtle or non-existant.

It's a squeak because I was not shaking my head or it would be a clank.
