stalling problems

I have a 97 sahara 4.0, auto. My jeep keeps stalling after driving it for 20 minutes or so. When I get off the freeway and come to a stop light it seems fine but when I push on the gas it starts to cough, and want to die. I can put it in park and it revs fine but in drive it shakes and stalls. It seems to refire most of the time but it will not go anywhere. After it sits for hours I seems do fine for another 20 minutes. Check engine light comes on only one out every 6 stalls. The codes show injector problems or missfire, but they are getting a pulse from the computer. It's like the engine is not gettin fuel when I push the gas. I have replaced the distributor, the cap , rotor, and it still is doing it. If anyone has any ideas please help. I don't think it is the fuel pump becuase it doesn't die under a load on the freeway. TPS should give me a code and a CPS wouldn't let it refire so please give me a idea.

if the codes point to the fuel injectors I would try getting some lucas fuel injector cleaner, it should be about $10 at your local auto parts store see if that helps first, I've had very good luck with this cleaner, do about 3x the dose. if not then check the cat maybe your exhaust is being blocked by cat failure. I had this problem in my dads H2 (little bit of a different engine and style 'damn chevys'). if the cleaner doesn't work and the cat is good then start pulling injectors and if they need replaced then replace them. how many miles does your rig have on it? a '97 (depending on your driving style and abuse) might need them replaced .

The cat war rattling and was just replaced when these problems started. So I thought I could be losing back pressure do to a clog of the ceramic cone being broken but the muffler shop said the muufler looked good. The injectors have all been looked at and they all look good but I will try to clean.

it shouldn't be loosing that much back pressure some guys just take the stupid thing off (very illegal). I would just try cleaning the fuel injectors first, the great thing about that lucas cleaner is that its just a normal fuel additive and it cleans not only the injectors but the whole fuel system.

Did you check to see if you have good fuel pressure in the fuel rail.

Fuel rail does make sense becuase sometimes it is harder to start up on hot days after it sits for hours in the sun. A fuel rail would show some kind of leakk correct. Would this cause the stalling when I give it gas after 20 minutes of driving. How do I check the pressure? Do I need to hook up the guage and drive and wait for it to happen or will I see it in idle testing? Thank you for the ideas and the help.

I bet you need a new fuel pump sonds like it's weak. The real way to check if it has the proper psi is with a gauge.

forget the gauge just put your lips on it and have someone try to start the engine. j/k don't do that.
