Nope. Starters are needed, hence the name.

Is it missing or just not working? Try tapping it with a hammer before giving it a jump start (IF it's still intact). Tapping it with a hammer is only a temp fix, and a replacement is needed.

FWIW -it's a super easy job. You can buy a starter and change it in a parking lot in 30 mins.

It works with both as long as the alternator is good.

Yeah I actually tried it on a dead alternator (in my less mechanically inclined days) thinking it would work and no dice

if the spur gear isn't making the connection when starting, you might be able to bypass solenoid by jumping the leads with a wire, but you need 2 people

Actually it will work with a dead alternator until the battery is dead. You need one or the other to power the electrical portion of the engine.

Yeah, i was out driving and didnt know my alternator was gone until it started losing power and finally died, which meant my battery was dead, i was almost home so i hoofed it after trying to push start it and got a battery from another vehicle to make it home

Edit: Its been a few days so im sure hes fixed it by now, sorry for the off-topic

it takes longer to go buy the starter than to put it on...What is it, 2-3 small bolts, pull the wire off...exchange it when you get the new one...even on a stock jeep there is enough room underneath to get to everything...here is the link I used
