starting problems

hi all...2006 jeep wrangler x

having problems starting it. the starter is about 6months old. i have total power to all systems it seems. battery is good. i dont think its the clutch safety thing...i tried putting the bypass fuse in..and nothing i also tried to put a bypass directly into the clutch safety thing nada.

my only thoughts are that the starter went bad...or its the ignition switch...any way to test it before i start handing out cash to replace stuff?

it makes a click sound once a few seconds after i try and start it...other then that no sounds...no trying to turn over and no other clicking sounds....

short of bringing it to a garage im out of ideas. i can take any pics anyone wants or give more info needed

O'reilly's tested my starter for free. Ignition actuator pin may be the culprit too. If so you'll need a t-10 security bit (PITA to find one around here). Good luck and welcome to the forum.

i tried to short the starter and it did nothing but spark...which means theres power to it atleast. my next area to look at is the ignition switch area. my father is coming over later to see if he can figure it out.

if you jump th e starter and it sparks but doesnt turn then the starter is probabaly bad but i would not rule out an under voltage condition, i would take apart all the battery and starter connections and clean them up with sandpaper and wire brush so all connecting surfaces are nice and shiny and make sure they are TIGHT, and maybe your altenator is not fully charging your battery, i would have that checked as well, finally rap your starter with a hammer a couple times , if its junk 9 out of 10 times this will get one last start out of it,,,, just think twice before you shut it off......good luck

so i pulled the starter off and tested it on the ground with a battery pack and it worked fine...my battery connections didnt look great...needed a cleaning for sure. i wonder if it was under voltage. well i broke a connector for the battery wire will need to replace that before i can test the starter back on the jeep. could it be the ignition switch or something?

If it clicks (your starter) when you turn the key that means your ignition switch works . Had the same symptoms on my D-max and come to find out the ring terminal connected to my battery for my fog lights was so rusted and corroded it was keeping that battery from charging and I found out just how sensitive a high torque electric motor (starter) is to voltage and current. If your connectors and cables were in so bad of shape that they came apart when you tried to just remove them I suspect you are having those same issues

Is the starter still clicking ? You should probably check the solenoid, make sure your rig is out of gear and jump the posts on it and your starter should turn then with some helpyou can check for continuity of solenoid when turning the ignition switch witch will rule one of those components out .hopefully not the switch as the solenoid should be fairly easy and inexpensive to replace

Sounds like it might be the same problem I had with mine not too long ago. My Jeep would start sometimes & sometimes not. I replaced the battery thinking that was the problem. Turns out I had a loose connector wire to my starter motor that the dealer had to fix. Not sure if that helps but good luck.
