State inspection flagged Jeep for wheels sticking out too far

Hello all, I have a 02 and got flagged today by state inspection for the tires sticking out beyond the factory flares. Now Im not to upset because that was one of the first upgrades I was planning but my wife would have pitched a bitch session so this is a perfect chance to pull it off because it is required by the state to get it registered. My question to any one out there is which company makes flares that cover 8" from the metal on the fender? Im running 33x 12.5 I stick out 8" past where the metal fender meets the factory flare. Factory only gives me 3" And I know no one with factory wheels and tires I could just throw on already gave a Facebook shout for anyone will to let me use theirs just to drive to the inspection station and have them take a picture. So Im trying to use this to my upgrade advantage.

Where do you reside? Some States do not permit extended flares.

I believe he lives in Maryland (according to the profile). 7" flares are about the widest I've seen..like these Rugged Ridge 11608.01 - Rugged Ridge 7" Fender Flare Set for 97-06 Jeep® Wrangler TJ & Unlimited - Quadratec Someone may make wider ones, but I couldn't tell you who. You must have very minimal back spacing in your wheels for your tires to be sticking out 8" beyond the fenders.

Im in Maryland, the guy who inspected it said he would let the flares slide as long as they covered the tires, besides that I would need to switch them out for smaller ones off another Jeep.

I would love to see a picture of this. I'm running 33x12.5 on 15x10's with 3.5 backspace. Still only stick out about 6". I've got these to cover them up. Bushwacker, 6" Pocket Style Fender Flares - BSW-1090807

I have the rugged ridge 7" flares. They are ugly and fade fast but offer good coverage.

I'm in MD too.. My inspector just told me to remove the spacers and bring it back in. I put the spacers right back on afterward. Is that an option for you? BTW I would recommend some fender flares. We took the jeep hunting though muddy fields this year and the mud covered the entire side of the jeep including the driver and passenger side mirrors and windows.

Look for some cheap tires/rims on Craigslist. You might be able to find someone parting out a jeep with the base combo for super cheap.

So I live in Hawaii and have the same requirements. The way people get through inspection here on almost all 4x4s with big tires is head to your local hardware store, get some garden/land scape edging, cut it to length and screw it into the fender flairs.

That's gonna be cheaper than getting used wheels and what not. In my state it has to be fixed with screws, not just duct taped on (ask me how I know).

Lots of people put the extensions on and then remove them after getting the inspection sticker, but the cops have been cracking down on 4x4s and lifted trucks/jeeps lately for not meeting requirements I left mine on for now. Doesn't look cool but keeps me legal for now.

Look at the pic below. Let me know if you have questions.

My tires stick out an inch, so I looked into the plastic landscape edging. I was thinking of temporarily using that to extend the fenders by trimming the edging and screwing it to the bottom of the fender with the rolled edge out.
I heard Utah could get picky. I Made sure I took my jeep to a Jeep specialty garage that does state inspections and no problem passing with out the modification.

If you are sticking out 8" from the body, you have some serious backspace issues! I'd be looking for some new rims. The pic below is my old Jeep. It has 15x 8x3.75 w/33x12.50's on them with a 4" lift and 6" flares. I had no problems at all, even at full turn, and there were NO washers in the steering stops.

Geat ideas guys, I have the American Racing Baja series 15x10 with press out set pretty much 8.5 inches are out and having 33x 12.5's just ballons them out another 3/4 - 1 inch beyond that. I just dont want to press the guy and throw on a 6" spread and take it back and make him think I think hes a fool or something. I just found yesterday when I picked it up the guy use to be a Maryland State Police automotive saftey inspection officer...talk about luck of the draw of all the inspection stations I try to be slick and choose the one closest to my work so I didnt have to take a half day to get this shit done...

Just a recap had the 7" flares applied and it got me past inspection
But I hate them and Hate they way they make my Jeep look like a newer Jeep...I'm taking them off this weekend as soon as I'm finished registering it any takers if I can't return them they will be sold real cheap. Changes the whole dynamic of the look...horrible I hate they way mine looks, takes all the aggressiveness out of the look having the wheels covered up..

Roger that on the zippers. This whole process has been abunch Bravo Sierra from the start. I dont have to do inspection again only once when you buy a used car in this shit hole state, but they get you when you do. These things are horrible.

Move to texas. They don't give a crap how far they stick out. I just got mine inspected a couple of weeks ago and mine stick out a full two inches. By the way, the inspector begged me to trade my TJ for his cherry MR2.

Ohio is cool too. Have 31s that stick out an inch. Nobody cares. Can't believe I was even reading about something so trivial. Our country is turning into a real problem, thanks state/federal government!
