Steering Box

Just confirming. Have check everything in the front end of my 97 tj. Have replaced the steerin shafts. When I turn the steering wheel about an inch the the lft and right i can see the shaft turning at the box with only the smallest movement, but the pitman arm does not move at all. Afer theat sspot of an inch each way then the pitman arm starts to move. Is my steering box shot? 130,000 miles

well if your steering is anything like mine, theres about 1-2" of play up at the 12 o clock position. All you probably need to do is tighten down your gearbox a little box, Ill find out one day when I work on my Jeep

I think when I installed mine, I saw an adjustment screw on top. If it's like my dodge, you loosen the nut, tighten the screw with a hex key, then tighten the nut. My Hanes manual gave a spec on max adjustment. It didn't help much but mine on my dodge was horribly loose. The inch you're getting both ways is pretty normal. I replaced mine when it was leaking rather than just the seal, in hopes of tightening it up, but new still gives an inch either way.

Well I drove my friends wrangler and it didnt have much play at all, I remember my jeep was never as loose as a chinese hooker.

Be careful when you tighten down your steerbox, too much and its ruined.

Wait, youre asking if your steering box is shot, but are you having problems with steering at all?
