Ok have a new problem on my jeep and I haven't even drove it since I bought it! Been sitting cause I've been doing lot to it! I'm in the middle of sanding my tub Sony can raptor line it and noticed a drip from the gear box just started when I moved it out of my garage to the driveway today dripping pretty good to, I looked at it and looks like its dripping from the top if the gear box so now my ? Is. How hard is this to replace? Obviously I can see 3 bolts through the frame but what else would I have to do to take it off and replace it? Band is this something I could do? Not having a lot if mechanical skills, lol.
According to your profile, you plan on going up to 33's, if its the power steering gear box, then you might want to consider getting a durango version as its supposedly better suited for larger tires. I have the same issue, tho I don't plan on upgrading from my 31's so opted for just a replacement which I picked up at rockauto.com which has saved me some money and yes its a refurbished part BUT lifetime warranty or until I sell my jeep (never). Here's a thread write up but another jeeper that might serve you well for additional questions:
Thanks for that writeup, I have already put a lift on my jeep snd put a new set of 32's on it tgats bugnenough for me.... I was not aware that a durango steering box would fit in there, looked like it mounted up just as you would a replacement tj box really no difference other than having to notch the bumper.. I think I will be buying the durango one and put it in.. thanks again
I replaced mine the other day. Key thing you will need that is not part of the toolbox is a pitman arm puller. (many auto parts stores will have a free rental (you "buy" it on a CC, but get refunded 100% when you return it) or you can just buy one. They aren't real expensive, but you will need the right size (larger one) that has clearance between the jaws for the size of the steering shaft coming out of the box.
You may also want flare wrenchs for the PS fittings, depending on how tight they are.
My pitman arm came off very easily, probably due to the lubricating properties of the PS fluid that had been dripping out of the shaft and onto the arm for some time
As the article mentions, it's just thise three bolts, plus the one bolt that clamps the shaft from the steering wheel onto the steering box.
The one thing I had an issue with was making sure that the coupler from the steering wheel shaft is pushed all the way onto the splined stub shaft from the steering box. If you look at the steering box, there is a radiused recess on the stub shaft. The bolt that clamps the coupler goes "through" that recess, and if the coupler isn't positioned so that the hole aligns with the recess the bolt doesn't slide through all the way.
The article above mentions doing the job with a helper. That would certain;y be easier, but you can do it with just one person (I did). The box is a little hefty, so be ready for that when you get the bolts loose.
Once you get the box and steering shaft bolted on, you re-attach the PS lines and bleed the system as described in the article.
Fairly easy job you can easily do in a few hours, just taking your time.
