Steering Linkage Upgrade - Which One ?

hallo,

i want to install a stronger steering linkage.

i found the currie steering linkage:

Dont buy the rustys. I have heard it asically sucks. But the Currie is pure beef! Deff. go with that. Its basically the stock looking steering only its way stronger. Much larger!

Jack also bent it over a period of about a year and as I said in that quote that I only wheel in the rocks. There are times when hammering down on the steering wheel just to get the tires to turn a few inches is necessary.

The Currie setup will be perfectly fine for what you do. And I will also say that I've never seen anything come out of Rusty's that I liked.

I run TnTcustoms HD over the nuckle system, abused it and so far no problems. I hear the currie system is also very strong, If you wheel anything hard enough your gonna break it. The currie system is an easy install and if you do bend a tierod thats a cheap repair. Heres a pic of my system.

if i spend 400$ for a new steerink linkage i want the best that i can get.

whats about the rockkrawler linkage? it looks more solid than the currie and costs the same. will it fit without the rubbing i currently have? is this a bolt-on linkage or do i have to drill or weld?

It looks similar to my set up, I would bet you will have to ream out your factory knuckles.

I run RK steering and have definitely had no complaints with it. Beefy stuff. It's not DOM is solid stock just like the RK control arms are. Not sure how much longer Jeremy will be producing the steering you have shown above, as there is a new generation of RK steering in the works that I've seen. However I have no knowledge of when it will be released.

Yup, you do have to drill out your knuckles to fit RK.

Currie has a nice system if you like the simplicity of the OEM design. It's also much beefier than the OEM system it replaces.

ORO also makes a nice kit. It's a cross-over sterring system that once dialed in is very nice. The only drawback to the ORO is the cost and tinkring with it to get it dialed in. EDIT: I should also mention that a good trac bar is essential to making the ORO system work well also. It only took me six months to figure that one out.

I've got the Currie steering and love it. Its solid hardened steel! When Absolute was installing my RK 5.5 xfactor suspension I asked about the RK steering but the previous generation steering isn't for sale any longer and the new generation isn't available yet. So I kept my Currie and I have no complaints.

I've wheeled for over a year in the AZ rocks with the Currie system and only recently did I bend the tie rod for the first time. But the tie rod was still in good condition (it wasn't weakened), other than the slight bend in it (and the extra toe in wasnt bad)... so I drove it a couple hundred miles the next day and went wheeling in the Northern Arizona red rocks

The next business day I stopped by Absolute Offroad and bought a brand new Currie tie rod for a really good price. I keep the bent one in the back of the jeep as a spare but I won't need it. the point is, with the currie, it will NOT break... it may bend a little if you smash it into a rock real hard but it is not going to leave you stranded... and it can be straightened again in a press and will be good as new. I will probably do that but I'm in no hurry

Just make sure you add at least 3 or 4 MORE shocks to that setup

I dunno if theres room, that one already has 5 shocks per wheel, plus all the steering stuff! I think it has 26 shocks altogether!

is a v8 zj steering linkage the same as the curries one for the tj? or close to it? i am in the same boat as nick except with the gfs jeep.. i dont like her 35s on her jeep.. time to beef it up a little

the V8 zj tie rod is not the same as the Currie tie rod that comes with the Currier HD Steering system. But it is WAY stronger than the stock TJ's HOLLOW thin tie rod.

The Currie is solid hardened steel. the ZJ tie rod is solid but its not as thick as the Currie Tierod and the ZJ tierod is not hardened steel like the Currie is. I had the ZJ tie rod and its great... but it moves the weak link from the tie rod to the TJs stock drag link. About a month or two after having the ZJ tie rod, my stock drag link SNAPPED in half. Thats when I sold the ZJ tie rod to a fellow jeeper and I bought a Currie setup.

there is not an upgrade available for just the drag link alone, that I'm aware of.. SO if you go with the ZJ tierod, your pretty much stuck with the stock drag link.

*edit:

just to be clear... the ZJ tie rod would be a great upgrade if you didn't want to buy a complete steering system. The ZJ tie rod is MUCH better than keeping the TJs stock tie rod... just remember that the drag link is the next weak link

Here are the part #s from Napa from when I bought my ZJ parts from them. Its not exactly cheap. Napa is never inexpensive. If you can find the ZJ tie rod and adjuster sleever used then you save a ton of money.

I bought Napa's 269 part #s vs the Moog #s.

I'm not sure of the difference but the guy at the counter assured me that the Napa parts were "stonger" and have lifetime warrenty - no questions asked.

269-6085 Napa Tie-Rod $71.99

but before spending all money for a ZJ tie rod you might just want to save up for a complete Currie Steering system

a buddy offers me a new not used rutys linkage for 110$.
i think it's better than the stock linkage and the price is ok...
rustys linkage



will it fit without modifying other things?
is the trackbar / tie-rod angle still ok with this linkage? i don't want a death wobble....

I have the currie. I have broken the currie setup. The nice thing about the currie setup is you can swap in your stock tie rod and head on down the road if you bust the currie one. Which is what happened to me. Mine busted when I hit a tree stump at just the right area to bust the tie rod. Bent the rod back into my spring pad mount and bent that.. was not a lite hit by any means.

Nicolas, It someone offered me that steering for $110 and all I had was stock I'd take it. Personally I think it maxes out that tie rod end on the drag link, but it will be better than what you have. And no it should not cause any problems with your trac bar. It's still near stock design.

i dont like any design where the drag link is mounted in the middle of the tie rod. having the tie rod go from knuckle to knuckle and the drag link connect to the passenger knuckle is the strongest way to go. tho it does require that you modify some stuff and know how to weld.

When you say dialed in? I am a discovery mechanic, so..... I am presently installing the ORO Steering System and dialing it in is a pain! I snapped the end off my steering stabilizer turning out of the garage. One direction turns more than the other and when my wheels are straight ahead, my steering wheel looks like I am making a hard turn.
