Steering seems to grab when turning

Sometimes when I turn the steering wheel there seems to be a slight grab and then release. I need to check and see if it happens when the Jeep isn't moving, but I believe it is occuring then also.

There isn't any noise, just a slight build up of pressure and then release. Any ideas?

Look up the term "bump steer" and see if that describes what you're experiencing...kinda sounds like it to me, but not sure. Otherwise, you might have something wrong with your alignment or even a brake caliper sticking or something?

Those are my guesses...

I did notice some wear on one of the tires, but it was on the rear. The previous owner could have swapped it around. I am not sure it is bump steer because it drives pretty straight and doesn't get squirly on bumps.

This is more of a catch and release type feeling.

What year Jeep?
Maybe the steering box is going out.

My first thought based on description is an air bubble in the power steering lines. It sort of hestiates then jumps back to normal power? That sounds about right. The steering box going out will usually give you some clues; be it noise, leakage, a more consistent failing that gets progressively worse, etc. Check the fluids first, make sure there is plenty in there.

I think it might be the steering box.

I just went outside and there is a noise. A Clunk about ever 1/4 to 1/2 turn. I One time I got no noise and then I did the next. This is while parked.

Check your pitman arm, and other connections I.E. trac-bar, draglink, I had a similar problem and my pitman arm was loose. Have someone rotate the steering wheel while you look underneath

LOL - Problem resolved.

The top radiator bolt had worked its way out and the overflow reservior (sp) was resting on the steering shaft knuckle. So every turn or so it would cause the plastic reservoir to pop and sound like a tie rod.

Simple and free! Best fixes are like that.
