Stock air box

What does the baffle inside inside the airbox right above the throttle body do ? Is it for sound restriction or does it have a real purpose as in directing air flow ?

The airbox is not close to the throttle body??? What do you mean by " inside the airbox right above the throttle body "

The square plastic box above the throttle body looks like a plenum

It's just a baffle. It lowers the noise for your intake. But i think it will also lower your intake flow rate.
Some other vehicles like fords pickup s have almost the same in most cases i removed that thing and we get like 1-4% power increase and more mpg but more noise. I would suggest try it with and without and post the changes.

Yes it is. I didn't realize there was different air intake systems between the 2.5 and the 4.0 . I was told they were the same setup

Well I can tell a difference both in noise and seat of the pants with the baffle out. It seems to rev easier and it doesn't lug at low rpm's in higher gears now. I also cleaned the throttle body off it was oil soaked
