Didn't ask, but ok, however basically agreeing with me (i.e. adding an iPod interface to the stock radio instead of buying one of those new "gee-whiz" aftermarket units)

You all enjoy this lovely Monday.
I don't think you understand.
A thief is looking for quick easy profit?

He will look for a complete stereo, with no car alarm.

With a removable face and a car alarm, the thief doesn't see the profit over risk and moves on. You are not stopping them, you are removing the interest.

It's like breaking into a house with no furniture or jewelry. lol.

And if he sees a stereo without a faceplate he'll "take a looK" in the glove box (even if it means slashing the soft top to gain entry). He won't bother with a stock radio (as no one seems to like them )

Soft top damage is covered under my car insurance. Because of that, I lock my doors even when my soft top is on.

And theft of your stereo is not?

It was another one of your rhetoricals. lol.
But, I do see your point. And, I won't bother listing all the great options you miss, just to have you discredit them.

Fair enough, and lets not forget that a lot of those options didn't exist in 2004!
(adding an iPod to a car stereo was 'cutting edge' 10 years ago)

You don't have to argue so much. I agree, that the lowest level stock radio is of less interest than an aftermarket radio. It doesn't mean that your radio or setup is the best. And, far from it.

I like all my radio options, which don't seem to interest you, and that is fine.

When I exit my vehicle, I also make sure that my faceplate is clearly visible in my hand. Thieves don't go about smashing and slashing, and "taking a look", as this would take time, attract attention and make a lot of noise. They quietly find a good target, I.E. Complete fancy radio, and get to work stealing it.

Not trying to argue, apologies if it appears that way.
What options are you referring to? (I promise not to try to discredit them, but I may say why I don't need them )

True. But, I like having "today's" cutting edge technology in my Wrangler. I not going to limit myself to 2004 technology.

If they come out with a car stereo option, that can drive FOR me and serve me drinks, I'll probably get it. You can stay with your Ipod attached to your stock stereo and your 2004 technology.

You're just baiting me. If you wanted or needed them, you would have gotten them. I find most of them I like best through my cell phone anyway. This includes GPS, Pandora, Jango, etc. So, if you have your cell phone connected, then you probably don't need them.

There are some options that can't be overcome by having a cell phone, but like I already said...If you wanted...........

Oh my, what an interesting conversation I just sparked.
To answer everyone's apparent curiosity as to why I want to do this, $30 for an untouched 2005 stock stereo/CD player with speakers is a good deal. I don't need any 'bells or whistles', as I don't even own an Ipod.
I know the faceplate on the newer radio is rounded on the corners; will that be an issue when I put it in? Or does it bolt on just like the old one? I don't want to chop up the dash or drill any new holes.

I have speakers; they're just really old, and mostly make static. Like the radio.
Do you think those will fit, too?

Putting that much effort into a system that produces "mostly static" just because it cost you $30 is silly.

I still say you should just invest in some new speakers and head unit. Either hit up Crutchfield or visit craigslist.

Hey !

I dig up this topic because I have the same question, and well, I don't want to sound snappy (don't hit me ! ) but as interesting as the debate that went on was, let's say none of you gave a real answer to TrailSketch's question ! ^^

I have nearly the same issue, I want to install a 2005 LJ stock radio on a 97 TJ. I own both the LJ and TJ, so it's a cost-free change here. When I bought the 97 TJ, it came without a radio (but I didn't care at all as it's not my everyday vehicle), and as I'm changing my 2005 LJ's radio to an aftermarket one, I'm thinking about putting the stock 05 one inside the 97.

Just like TrailSketch, I don't care at all about the rounded corner VS squared corner thing (looks is not important), plus I'm not looking for performance sound-wise, I just want to know if it will mount without modification.

Thanks guys !

Extra question : the 05 stock radio has a CD player, do you know if it will work on the 97 TJ ?

I too, dug up this post looking for an answer. And through the entire debate never did see an actual answer? Anyone??
