Strange leak from front

Hey everyone,

I have a 2003 Wrangler X - 27,xxx miles on it. I have noticed I small leak coming from the front. About 1 drop every few days. I it measures 15 inches back from the front bumper and 16 inches left of the front tire.

Above this is some circular looking gasket about 2 inches in diameter. There is grease all around this thing and a black liquid (same liquid I have discovered on the ground). in the middle of it. My friend said it looked like a nipple for putting grease into something.

The liquid looks like oil, but I don't think it is, because it doesn't appear to be coming from the engine. Does anyone know what this thing is that is leaking? Also my Jeep is still under the power train warranty. Does anyone know if this covers it? If it is not a power train thing, how much does this part run for?

Thanks

Ok, After I posted this, I came across the picture in the Sticky about steering being off center. I printed off the picture and went out for a look. Its the drag link that is leaking. I also noticed that it is leaking on both ends.

I am also having a problem with my Jeep pulling to the right. Could this be contributing to it? I need some advice on how to take care of this problem

Thanks

Hi there, the drag link should only have excess grease on either end, look above the drag link for leaking gaskets in the engine or other parts for oil spots. More then likely the leak is higher up and just dripping on the link. Your steering wheel being off and the pull is probable due to just being out of alignment. pretty simple fix there at your local alignment shop.

Hope it helps

It could be your steering box leaking and running down your pitman arm/drag link. Try and trace it's lines. Otherwise have you done any heavy water crossing lately that might've thinned out the grease in your steering?

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the responses. I just went and looked under and in the engine of my Jeep, and I am not seeing any other leaks. I also ran my hand over the drag link, and didn't get any liquid on it.

I did see a lot of grease on both ends of the drag link and also on the ends of the tie rod. Is this normal? Also, is there some kind of liquid inside of the drag link? I also noticed that something has been leaking onto the inner side of my passenger rim.

I didn't see anything above in the engine bay, and a check of the oil level showed safe. I also smelled the drop of black liquid, and it didn't smell like oil. I am really starting to get confused here.

Any ideas?

Thanks once again

Try putting a piece of cardboard under the leak to see what color the fluid is. My guess is the steering gear.
