Strange Smell in 4wd

Hey all! Finally took my Jeep out yesterday for some more offroad fun. Went to a local construction site where they had a bunch of fill dirt piled up. Figured I couldn't really hurt anything there. Put it in 4wd and climbed a few piles and had some fun.

Noticed a odd burnt fluid type smell though when I put it in 4wd. Is this normal when its not used often? Should I think something may be wrong? Only smells that way in 4wd....but I didn't have it in 4wd for long. It was a short and quick dirt run before I had to leave.

Do you guys normally wheel in 1st or 2nd gear to start out?

It might be because you don't use it often. I bought mine brand new and the first time I took it out it smelled a little at first, but not anymore. Either that or you just scared yourself and had to change your pants...

When I'm in 4L I drive in 3rd and climb in 2nd but I drive normal in 4H start out in 1st then 2nd etc.

Wasn't my pants!

MIght be I just don't use it much. I'll have to go back out and leave it in a little longer and see if it goes away.

What are some good rules about when not to use 4wd. I've heard dry pavement is bad. If I'm in dirt...even fully dry dirt....is it ok to pop into 4wd just to give it some use. Or in the rain on pavement?

Here's a quick pic from my short adventures yesterday. I know it looks like nothing....but it sure felt like I had this thing at a steep angle Still getting comfy with what this thing can do....and I'm sure it can do a lot more than what I'm comfy with. I probably should just drive it up and over that little incline, but I was afraid of bottoming out as I cleared the top of it.

You'll be surprised what a stock Jeep can do. Check out these videos I made, my Jeep was stock when I made them.

As far as 4wd, don't use it on pavement raining or not. I only use mine on sand, lose dirt, mud, or when climbing.

Here's the link to the videos:
