Sway Bar Links

Thanks to your help finding my rattle up front, I believe that it is the sway bar links, there seems to be alot of play on the top where the link attaches to the swaybar. I will not be doing the off road thing so I really do not think that I need the quick disconnects. Is it ok to just buy OEM replacements? I have also seen some on Evil Bay that look like OEM replacements for about $50.00 to my door. I have not checked the price with my dealer yet because I wanted to check with you first. Stop buy a local AutoZone or Checkers... they have some nice EnergySuspension polyurithane endlinks that work great for stock replacements for about $30(?). Otherwise they'll cost you prolly $40+ at a dealership.

I wanted to ask this yesterday, but didn't want to hijack your thread.

What's the purpose of disconnecting the sway bars? I mucked around and read some stuff but I guess I'm not getting the gist of it

Iam new to this, but if I understand correctley the sway bar links attach to the sway bar which keeps the body roll to a minimum. If you remove (permanent, or quick disconnect) the links the body will roll more and it will also alow the vehicle to articulate more. Wow, did I say articulate? That is my biggest word since elevator! I hope Iam close to a accurate description, but if Iam not Iam sure that someone will correct me. Like I said, the Jeep thing is new for me. Scooby

Disconnecting the sway bar links allows the suspension on each side to have much more independant movement in an off-road environment. When connected the sway bar tries its best to limit the differential movement.

I'm assuming then, depending on how you drive, it's best to keep them hooked up if the beast is your daily driver.

all depends on how comfortable you are with body roll. i've been running with no sway bar for a little over 2 years.

I recommend you try it on a relatively abandoned road......I felt like I was swerving all over the road with mine disconnected.

It does definitely take some getting used to. I run my anti-rock on the loosest settting all of the time which is darn near like not having a sway bar at all. If you drive on the road without it then just realize even more that you aren't driving a sports car and you'll be fine. Don't take corners in your neighborhood at 40 like you used to and you'll keep the shiny side up.

However disconnecting your sway bar while off roading will be abuot the best thing you can do to keep your tires in contact with the trail. The more you keep your tires on the ground the better traction you will have.

Which do you disconnect, top or bottom? And do you just leave the bar hanging or do you yank the whole thing out of there?

Easiest way is to disconnect the lower links from the axle. Then tie the entire sway bar and links up out of the way. Buddies of mine that still have sway bars use the large zip ties around the sway bar and the frame to keep them out of the way. Easy to use and just cut them off when you are connecting again and throw them away.

Get yourself a set of JKS "Quicker Disconnects." They allow you to disconnect the sway bar and fasten it out of the way on included brackets for off-road use, and reconnect it for on-road use.

The process of disconnection/reconnection takes all of 30 seconds.

The practice of leaving the rear sway bar hooked up, with the front one disconnected for highway use is highly dangerous, and induces over-steer. Not to be melodramatic, but a fast input on the street (wet or dry) and you could be looking out the windshield in the direction you just came from rather than where you were planning to go.

The new JK Rubicon comes with electrically activated sway bar disconnect, but it defaults to the "connected" position above 18mph for safety. That should tell you something!
