Question synthetic oil ???

should i use synthetic oil in a tj with 100k+ do u guys and girls like synthetic?

Alway a "can of worms".

Some will say always run synthetic. Others say always run dino.

Your preferance.

I run Valoline max life. Dino/synthetic blend. Most oils seem to be going to the synthetic blends.

i just threw in mobile 1 synthetic today. 5w-30 for the fall and winter.

Really up to the individual. We used to say if it feels good, do it and if it tastes good, eat it. If you like it, and it works for you, then go ahead on it

I use quaker state 5W-30 year round. Change it and the filter every 3k no matter what. None of my vehicles burned oil after 200K each when I got rid of them. Did this in a Ford Explorer, Toyots SR5 pickup, my YJ, my TJ has 75k and I expect 200K+, my kids Mazda 6 with 70K still going strong. I work in the automotive rental business and whenever we ask a vehicle manufacturer, be it car, truck, bus, etc., they all say synthetic is fine as long as you stay with their oil change interval. This defeats what those oil manufacturers say but they are holding the warranty. So all I can say is believe whatever you feel is good for you. An oil and filter change in my TJ only cost me 15 dollars to do it myself.

i don't use synthetic, and i would be less likely to at higher mileage, the smaller molecular compound causing leaks theory i tend to believe.

i use valvoline max life also

Use of synthetic oils should begin before 40 - 50,000 miles. After that, run dino, or syn blend.

Valvoline Max for me....Question though....should I switch to 5w for fall and winter? I've always ran 10w year round in all my vehicles. Where you at, Jerry?? Answer this one for me.

I know from reading past posts that Jerry would only run 5w if he was back in the dakota's or in Buffalo, NY. with that said, if you're gonna be anywhere where the temperature is around the freezing point or below, i would say 5w-30 is a definite good decision. synthetic too. here in ME, the real cold starts the week before thanksgiving and lasts till the last couple weeks of march/early april. (i was skiiing on the top of sugarloaf in late april at reggae fest in april) haha. plan to probably run synthetic through the summer too. just at 10w instead.

your owners manual has a chart of what oil to use in what climates, 10 w30 is ok to like 10 or 20 below.

If your motor is used to using a mineral oil vs. a synthetic oil you need to stick with what you are running. Like posted earlier if you dont switch to a full synthetic before 30 or so thousand miles you wouldn't want to run a full synthetic. The oil molecules are smaller and will actually lubricate less in a motor that is used to running mineral oils which have bigger oil molecules. And there would be a greater chance of blowby, leakage etc. if a 100K jeep were to run full synthetic for the first time, and it doesn't get used to it or "better" just stick with what the jeep has been running. Dont fix what aint broken!

i live in jersey, im due for an oil change in 1450 miles. with the colder season should i change my weight from 10w-30 to 5w-30 for the cold weather? if so why is this?

I always ran synthetic from 10k on my older jeep. I just bought an 06 with 39k on it and I don't know what was run in it up until this point. However I threw mobil 1 synthetic in it at 39K, do you think thats ok to keep running or is it going to be a problem of less lube if it never had synthetic in it up until now?

if you havent noticed any blue smoke from the tail pipe, knocking or lack of compression/performance i would say you are alright. But stick with it

I use Cstrol GTX High Mile. 10w-30, wix filter or Mopr

some of my letter do not work on my keybord,lol!

Viscosity Difference. Viscosity is the resistance to flow. When the ambient temperature is colder, oil does not flow as easily. To compensate you use a oil with less viscosity.

actually I do use mobil 1 syntec for all my vehicles, it is like feeding my kids with good stuff not generic, it makes me feel better. I do not mind spending extra bucks...

Honestly I wouldn't see the difference probably if I used a different cheap oil, but it still makes me feel better.

Well I live in the Dakota's, 2 years ago i bought my jeep and switched the oil to Mobil 1 5w30 for winter with 71,000 miles on it. My jeep didn't like that oil at all. I never saw any smoke from the tail pipe, or any leaks, but it used a quart in the 1st thousand miles. I talked to the previous owner, and he used Havoline 5w30 for winter, and 10w30 for summer since it was brand new. I switched it back to the conventional Havoline oil that was always used in my jeep since it was new, and it uses no oil at all inbetween oil changes with Havoline oil.
I do run Mobil 1 in the Jeep Patriot the other half drives, but we bought that brand new and started it on synthetic right from the start.

I use regular old oil in the Jeep and my 2009 Dodge. I asked about synthetic and was told sure it was okay as long as I follow the change guidelines. So why bother. Now in my Audi S4 I run synthetic as it came with it new and that is what is what Audi says to run. But that is a 4.2 liter Double Overhead Cam 40 valve high performance V8 , a lot different than the 4.0liter in the Jeep.

The fact that I go to the Rolex 12 and 24 every year. I use Mobil 1 syntec. The cars there are under heavy pressure to finish and that's what they use. I rock it in both my dd and my rig. Cost is a bitch, but so is engine failure.

From my experience with synthetic oil in cars with higher miles, I say dont use it unless you know it has always been used. If the engine was beet on in the past the synthetic oil could find its way through the gaskets where regular oil wouldn't.... I'm just going on what happened to me with a car i bought from someone.

Rebuilt is similar enough to new that synthetic should be no problem.
