Synthetic Oil Worth it?

Hey guys-

For the last couple of oil changes I have been using Mobil-1 Full Synthetic 10W-30 oil in my 02 Wrangler with 52K miles and haven't really noticed any kind of difference in performance, gas mileage, etc. What are you guy's opinions on using synthetic vs. conventional oils? I buy the oil at Wal-Mart in the 5 quart containers and the price difference isn't that drastic when you buy it that way. I was paying $21 for the 5-quart of synthetic whereas the convention mobil oil runs about $11-12 for the 5-quart so it's still cheaper than going to get the oil changed somewhere and it gets done properly. Penzoil came out with a synthetic that runs about $18 for the 5-quart and there are some other brands like Castrol and others I can't remember now. What is your opinion on using synthetic? Do you think it's worth it or will extend the life of my engine?

Havoline 5w30 with a Purolator Pure 1 filter has always worked for me. I think it is just a matter of preference.

I use royal purple 10w-30 with a wix filter. I like it but like kg4kpg said it is a matter of prefrence.

IMHO as long as you service your vehicle regularly and properly I really do not see and advantage to using synthetics. The oils on the market now meet or exceed manufacturers standards and if properly maintained I would expect that you will NOT have an oil related failure in your jeep for the life of the vehicle.

I have an 02 X Model with 143,000 plus miles...Castrol (dino oil)10W30 in summer and 5w30 in winter (northeast jeeper)..Purolator filters..every 3000 miles (well ok a couple of them where 3500 to 4000 miles) motor purrs like a kitten (well a jeep kitten anyway).

I'd say no it makes no difference what so ever as long as you regularly change your engine. Any engine oil be it dino or synthetic are engineered well enough today to provide plenty of protection for around the 3k mile range.

Unles your engine is boosted its not really worth the 60-70 bucks. I do think you can pick few horses up with synthetic though.

I buy the mobil 1 5000 at walmart with a walmart brand supertech oil filter.

I change the oil out at 4-5k..

IMO keep an eye on the oil when it gets dark brown.. Its an indication of oil breaking down.

If you are running full synthetic. and changing it out when the oil is still clear, its a wwaste of money..

Mobil one full synthetic normally last me 7-8k. But I cant afford it.

To me, especially due to me living in a temperate climate that doesn't get uber-cold, synthetic oil in the engine is not worth it. I run Valvoline dino oil in my Jeep and have run nothing but dino oil for over 40 years of driving. Changed regularly, it has done a perfect job with all my engines over the years with never any engine problems. My '97 TJ has 181,000 miles on it and it uses no more oil than it did when I bought it brand-new back in 1996 which is to say none. Zero engine problems.

I will admit if I lived in some place like Buffalo NY or North Dakota that I would definitely run synthetic in the winter but here in SOCAL, my engine is extremely well protected year-round by Valvoline dino. And if Valvoline were to disappear tomorrow, I'd be just as happy running Havoline, Mobil, Shell, etc. dino oils.

I DO run a synthetic ATF in my auto transmission because it can get hot towing my trailer or while rock crawling, plus I run a synthetic power steering fluid because my big tires on rocky trails can heat up the power steering fluid to the point of almost boiling. So I'm not anti-synthetic, I just don't happen to believe I need synthetic in the engine or axles in my conditions.

And with 47 years of driving on strictly dino engine oil with zero engine problems all those years, it's working pretty darned well for me. You don't need synthetic motor oil to prevent engine problems/damage as some synthetic fanatics would have us believe.

Synthetic is good in Turbo cars, esp those that use the Engine oil as part of their lubrication/cooling. On 90% of our Jeeps I don't feel its necessary. But it won't hurt anything if you want to run it.

I run it in my lotus b/c it revs to 8500rpm. and it makes me feel good. I also run Brake fluid that doesn't boil until it reaches insane numbers b/c if I'm going really fast and I want to stop....I want to stop safely. Also boiled brakes on the track are bad!

However I'm running "high mileage" blend oil in the jeep. I rarely rev it over 3k. and it has 118k on it...don't see/feel the need for synthetic. The jeep is the first vehicle I've had in years that I haven't run synthetic in. But its also the lowest revving, non F/I'd vehicle I've owned.

Watching the interval will definitely prove more helpful than the brand/variation of oil you use.

Way to bump a really old thread...


I use Castrol GTX High mileage with the Wix filter. I was using bosch before with no issues but I'm trying out the wix now.

For what it is worth I have replaced many engines that for one reason or another have had antifreeze in the crankcase . The only ones that have survived that were running synthetic oils. I run a oil that most people have probably never heard of Schaeffers 5-30 year round.

I have have been using the synthetics since they came out. I have 2 Fords, a 93 F350 with 569,000 miles, a 98 4X4 F150 with 289,000. I always try to change around 3K but sometimes its 4K, The mobile one and castrol is what I use and your local auto parts store runs specials all the time for a gallon at 19.99 with filter.

I am new to the little engines that could, but what can it hurt giving them some extra protection.

I'm running Schaeffer's 5w-30 with a Wix filter currently...this may be a complete fluke, but I recently made a 300 mile trip in my Jeep. I stopped around halfway for gas since I can't usually make it the entire way on one tank and I went ahead and calculated my mileage from my last fillup.

Driving 55-60 on back highways with a little stop and go for towns -- 23.71mpg. That made my eyes grow wide when I saw that and I punched in the numbers two more times to double check. I'll try to calculate it up based on this next tank and post those numbers as well since I'm driving the 300 miles back home later today. Best I've ever done before that was 16.9mpg with similar driving conditions and 17.9 running almost all interstate. That's with the 4.0 5 spd 31" tires with 3.73 gears (and speedo calibrated for the larger tires).

Just thought I'd add in that the 23.71 must have been a fluke...since I forgot to check my mileage the tank AFTER that, I bet my mileage would have appeared to have dive bombed. Why? I bet the tank I was at that was responsible for my 23.71 calculation shut off way earlier than it should have.

I calculated up my mileage on the first leg of my return trip -- 17.8 mpg which is about on par with my other calculations. Haven't gotten gas since I've returned home so not sure how the second leg went.
