Tailgate HARD to close

My tailgate is very difficult to close. I have to really slam it to get the latch to work. Whatever is stopping it on the hinge side (maybe the 3rd brake light contacts?) seems to be stopping it too early. If I let it stop and rest there, there is still maybe a 2 inch gap on the left side where it latches. I feel like I have to almost bend the tailgate to get that latch together. Is there some kind of adjustment I can perform?

Sounds like your hinges are just corroded and need to be lubed... Try spraying some pb blaster on them and work it back and forth.

I have this exact same problem. I have to grab the spare tire and kind of lift the whole gate up then slam it..... Anyways here is what I did. Open the gate and lightly close it so you can see how close the latch and pin come to each other. Use a star socket to remove the pin inside. If it needs more or less space just add or remove a washer to the pin then reinstall it. You still might have to slam it a little though. When I first bought my jeep it did this and it had like 3-4 washers between the body and pin. Now there are no washers on it. I think the rear end hit I had last year effect this. Lubed hinges would help too.
