Tcase Problem Help!

Hi all, today I was driving in the snow and decided to see how my 4wd would do. It started out fine but I got to where I needed to downshift from 4th to 3rd and as soon as I hit the clutch the tcase started grinding like crazy. I tested it out a few more times and had the same results. However in 4lo there was no problem at all. Also a couple weeks ago I changed the tranny and tcase fluid and the tcase fluid came out solid black and water like, did not resemble AT4 fluid at all. It is also very rough to go from 4hi to 4lo I almost have to use both hands. I still need to check the shift linkage to rule that out. Do yall have any ideas about the grinding? Btw its an 04 X 5 speed, any help is appreciated. Thanks!

If the fluid came out that bad, it probably needs to be flushed and replaced again.....

Sounds like a linkage issue. Crawl under and check the lever to make sure it is where it needs to be for your gear. I believe the lever needs to be in it's most forward position. You'll want to loosen your adjustment screw if it is not. I'll check back tomorrow to see if you are good to go or not and I can go crawl under my rig to double check the lever position for you.
