Thinking about upgrading exhaust

I'm looking for any suggestions for upgrading my exhaust system without spending a ton of $. I just have the stock system on my 2000 TJ Sahara now. Want something that sounds a little louder and is durable. Is it worth it for he whole cat back replacement or just new tailpipe and miffler? Any suggestions are appreciated.

Well all a "cat-back" system is, is a muffler and tail pipe.... So by piecing it together your self you can save quite a bit of money.

You can currently get the Banks Monster cat back on autoanything for $200 shipped. Thats what i did, just haven't installed it yet. I have heard nothing but good things about it.

The cat-back systems you see in the Jeep catalogs like Quadratec's are WAY WAY overpriced when compared to what a good local independent muffler shop can do for you.

Though this was ten years ago, I had to have my exhaust reworked after installing a long-arm (mistake) suspension. My small local independent muffler shop charged me $85 total to rework it and install a new Thrush muffler that sounded really good. I didn't need/want a fancy tip but if you want one, they can do that for you too.

I just installed a Banks cat back system on m 2001 sport. I got it for $225 on ebay, and it sounds really good. Doesnt drone at highway speeds(my BFG A/T's are louder) andits not obnoxiously loud when it idles (the UK has "noise polution"" laws). Did the install myself, and it was really easy, once I got the old exhaust off, but I was having issues with the pipe touching the heat shield on the bottem of the tub and the rear track bar, causing some annoing rattling sounds. Running with no pipe from the muffler till I sort out a solution, so its a bit louder now than it was, but I don't mind the sound.

My best advice is to buy a complete cat-back system off the internet or from a catalog only if you want to pay nearly 3X what it would cost to duplicate & have installed locally. And also only if you don't also want the ability to have the muffler easily swapped for a different model if you don't like the sound the one from the internet produces.

ive got a 2 chamber 40 series on my jeep with about a 12" tailpipe and turndown. i love it, girlfriend hates it. cheap and easy. sawzall off old muffler, slip turndown into new muffler, slip assembled unit onto factory pipe. clamp everything with muffler clamps, whaalaaa!!! less than $100. or you can buy knock off flowmasters from CSI for about $35 a piece!
