Third brake light

I took my spare off b/c it was too small and until i get the money to get a 35" spare im going without spare, i have AAA and i wont be offroading until next summer b/c i just dont have the money for gas and broken parts...anyway to the point
i took the light part out of the third brake light bracket and was wondering if there is any reason why i cant drill a rectangular hole in the top part of my tailgate 5 in long and 1 inch high and all the way through to that i can just screw the light in there and have it recessed and still ahve the third brake light and not have to pay like $25 for a stick on led one

then just feed the wires either through the tailgate and up to it or just tape them to the back side of the tailgate

any reason i cant do this?

Sounds like a plan.

But, I have never been able to drill a rectangular hole.

I don't understand why you would want to cut a hole in your tailgate to avoid spending the money on a "stick-on LED". I bought my LED bar on e-bay for $7.99 including shipping. Seems to me that even $25 would be a whole lot cheeper in the long run then cutting a big hole in your tailgate.

just remember the light must be DOT approved first or it is useless
