Thoughts on this idle trouble I'm having

When my jeep gets up to temp, (shows 210 on dash) my idle tends to drop out then rev up. Sometimes it stalls, I get by just by giving it gas to keep rpms up, but it's frustrating. When I first bought the jeep the CEL was on showing codes for 02 sensors I replaced all of them and it didn't fix the problem. I removed the throttle body cleaned it, that didn't help. I just replaced the throttle position sensor, still reving at idle. I bought a new Air control valve, I haven't put in yet....

The CEL is normally not on anymore only when the idle cuts.

You say the CEL comes on, what is the current code?

Does it have to be on to get code? It only flashes on when idle drops.

The code is stored in memory until it is reset or after number of cycles after the problem is fixed.

if you do not have a code reader just stop by any auto parts store and they will read it for free. just remember oem parts for o2 sensors , tps , iac are the way to go. cheap auto parts sensors are crap

The code reader at the parts store will only read if the CEL is on...

I dropped it off Monday, at a auto motive place and they're having trouble figuring out what it is. Picked it last night and still doing the same thing.

A dealership might have better luck getting that code. That being said, I would definitely swap out the IAC and go from there. Make sure you're using OEM replacement parts. I've heard horror stories about made in China parts from the big box auto parts stores. Rockauto is a good source for that kind of stuff.

Good luck

Mine would do the same thing when it warmed up. I'd be at a stop sign, rev it to move up a few feet and it'd stall out. I was getting all kinds of o2 codes and a crank position sensor code. All my o2 sensors were new, so I replaced the crank sensor. It seemed to fix it. It's been about a week with no problems.

I also cleaned the IAC before I replaced the cps. It seemed to help it, but not fix it.

I believe a mechanic did that sensor, I will double check. I did clean the throttle body and sensor. They want to do a wiring kit, said it was in a service bulletin that was causing jeeps to not pass emissions, but isn't covered by the emissions warranty (what?!?) and can't guarantee it will fix the issue they can't find again (what!?!)

Update I brought it back, and now they say it needs a new crankshaft. They said it's worn and is causing the timing to go off a few degrees. Which is making the computer reset.

I understand the camshaft might not be covered by emissions law, but if thats why I can't get my sticker you think they could help me out a tad.

$3000 to get it fixed, I'm still not convinced that's the problem.

Any Thoughts?

Map sensors and tps sensors can make them run horrible and not set codes sometimes, I would really look into the possibility of the map sensor not very expensive and easy to change out or if you know someone with another jeep swap some parts? Does it only happen when it's hot?

Yes only after temp gets to 210

Update

I decided to bring it to Lawless jeep in Woburn. First day they said nothing was wrong with it. They still charged me the diagnosis fee, so I told them I need to know what's causing the problem. The second day they told me I need a camshaft $3000. Doesn't sound right to me.

If it was your camshaft, it would happen more than just when it gets to temperature and a CEL would more than likely be on 24/7. Im no expert but I have a good bit of wrench time in for my age thanks to my dad and uncle. It sounds like your problem is coming from a sensor. Not a hard part. Your best bet would be to take it to a reputable shop. Hope it works out for you

I would definitely take it to another shop for a second opinion.

****update******

After about 4 tanks of gas treated with injector cleaner the problem went away! I have my sticker and the dealer that said it was the camshaft reimbursed me.

Now I can get back to, being a happy jeeper
