throwout bearing

okay i have been reading old threads and it appears that my throwout bearing is going or is gone on my jeep. when i push in the clutch there is a loud whinning type noise and also there is random blue smoke coming from my exhaust (random as in it only happens some times). so if it is indeed my throwout bearing my question is, how much would this cost to get changed in a shop (a ball park figure) and how hard would it be to change my self (im assuming pretty hard)
thanks guys

cost me 500 last year. but since they had it down i had them put in a new clutch kit. from what i've read its not hard to do yourself, just a little time consuming.

The clutch runs 150 at napa or auto zone. Get the luk clutch standard. No pro line.

I get a quick, high pitch rather quiet squeak sometimes when clutching. Is this the TOB?

Is this of concern? How long can I run once this starts? Does not giving it immediate attention cause more problems?

Once the throwout bearing goes bad, if indeed your noise is caused by the throwout bearing, it's not something you can just live with so I'd think about how to get it replaced sooner rather than later.

Get a Luk replacement clutch kit from Dial-A-Clutch - Your LuK Clutch Kit Specialist which includes a new throwout bearing, clutch disk, pressure plate, pilot bearing, and pilot shaft for $140 or so. Replacing a disk/throwout bearing isn't technically difficult but it's definitely an all day job if you haven't done one before. A tranny jack is darned handy for this job.

When you have a choice, buy American.
