Thunk in 4hi

Driving along in snow in 4hi, I would be slipping if in 2hi, at random points I hear a loud thunk and the Jeep bucks a little and then it's fine, but I lose power to the front axle until I put it back into 2, then into 4hi again. I'll be fine for a while, and this will happen again.

I think that it is slipping out, but that would indicate there being some play in the linkage...and I assume the shit lever would have little resistance for some of the movement in/out of 2/4 before it started to poke the magical elves that give the front wheels power.
