Ticking noise

I have a ticking noise when i start my jeep. The sound goes faint after awhile and it only ticks when I push the gas.

It's probably the infamouos 4.0 tick. Seems like most Jeep have them or get them in time. I've tried chasing mine down but it only makes ya go crazy.

Mine seems to do it the most in colder weather and have found it tends to go away after a lil warm-up time or wait about 1-2mins after starting, turn off and then re-start, then it seem to be alot less noticable.

could be the oil pump drive gear. symptoms are: ticking, running slightly hotter than normal, and the oil pressure will be slightly lower than normal. it's usually louder in the winter and when the engine is cold.

Same problem. Mine happens on start up and gets louder when its cold. How much is the oil pump drive gear? Is it ok to let this go? I'm at 80k

Same thing on my '97 4-cyl, 130k miles. Louder when cold, quiets a bit but is still noticeable once warm. I suspect its valve/lifter tick, but this is only my educated guess. Strange though, I owned a 96 dakota mid-size pickup awhile back, had the same engine w/ 86k miles, never ticked. I suppose when I get around to replacing the leaky head gasket, I'll gauge the valves/lifters for tolerances. I'll be sure to report my findings

this happened to my husband. it took 2 years before it finally completely stopped working and he needed it replaced. he is fixes everything on our jeeps himself, but decided to have this replaced by a mechanic b/c he was very busy with work. anyway, it cost us about $275 for parts and labor. if you do it yourself it will probably be 1/3 of the cost.

My ticking is the exhaust manifold, goes away after warm up. I saw a post the other day where someone was having the same problem and they changed the Fram oil filter out and it solved the problem. Too little oil getting to the top of the engine at startup.
