Ticking noise when starting up in cold weather

Here on Long Island, NY it's about 30 degrees or colder in the morning. When I start up the Jeep there is about 3 or 5 seconds of ticking noise and then it goes away. Some people told me it's the oil, it thins out and then the ticking stops. But can it really thin out that quickly? It only happens in cold weather.
