tie rod, drag link, etc.

Hey guys I went out all day today to try and get my tie rod to move. It wouldn't! I removed the little clamps that you must loosen to twist it and I looked on the back where the little gap is, it was just rust, rust, rust. I tried for hours with lube, wire brush, and pipe pliers but it just wouldn't budge.

I figured the threads are rusted together and will not be moving... I might still try and move it, but I don't want to break it.

I noticed, trying to heat the rod at the ends??? I tried with a heatgun, I don't know if that's enough heat or not... Should I just buy new end brackets and bar??

Any suggestions? I don't want the 400$ currie system! It's just too much for my budget. (college) If something like a replacement?

If I went to a junkyard, what year wranglers/cherokees etc. should I look at..

Thanks guys!
1998 jeep wrangler sahara, 4" susp lift 1.25" bl. 35's 4.0L 5 speed.

Appreciate it

I picked up a beefy tie rod a couple years ago for about $100 . . . it came with new beefier tie rod ends too . . . not sure how much the drag link would run . . . do you need to adjust it too? If not, I'd say just pick up a new tie-rod . . . if you want a stocker you can probably post up on the board and find one pretty cheap . . . they are cheezy as hell so IMHO it's worth it to upgrade . . . I wouldn't spend more than 25-40 bucks on a used stock tie rod.

Yeah I saw one on eBay (new) for about 65$ just for the tube and the tie rod ends were 20$ a piece... Thought it was a good deal. I do need to adjust it... Needed it for awhile, tires are almost gone, I can't believe i'm still driving it under the condition it is..

I'd give it a few days of spraying it down with some PB blaster twice a day before I gave up on it, but I'm also hella cheap...

Sorry to hear about your loss...My prayers are with you and your family.

Try tapping the slit sleeve, use a hammer, hit it in the middle a few times, not too hard, like you are beating a drum. Just sit there and hit it for a few minutes, vibration loosens everything up. Laters,

Thanks blade I'll try that when I get back but on quadratec I found a tie rod for 27$... And the ends for 17$ each so I might fall into that

bignuke, sorry to hear of the loss....

have you looked into zj tie rods? a beefier than stock rod to work with those larger tires. i haven't looked too far into it but plan to soon. i bet you could get them at a junkyard for a decent price. getting that tie rod loose, grab a nice big pipewrench, 16"+, a regular propane torch, rubber mallet hammer and pb blaster. b/w those tools you should get that thing loosened up. i used those to get my drag link loose. haven't tried the rods yet though!

As for heat, trying using Propane Torch or MAP gas torch from Home Depot or Lowes.

For cheap upgrade, you can try hunting down a Tie Rod from a Grand Cherokee (V8) style, since it has the thicker tubing.

Most of the Wrangler 97-06 should be pretty interchangable for steering set-ups.
