TJ 2.4 to 4.0 Swap

I am wondering what is involved in swapping out the 2.4 for a 4.0.

My TJ, in general, is in great shape. I am contemplating the swap as a spring project.

I know from the FSM that the 6 speed in the 2005 model year is shared by both engines so this should not present a problem.

Future considerations could include gearing/diff, but this is not mandatory for the swap.

Are there any other major considerations I should be aware of to proceed with just an engine swap?

Thanks in advance - Tom

Engine and frame mounts are different, wiring harness is different, computer is different, exhaust is different and I'm sure there are a ton of other items as well. Are you positive the input shaft is correct for both the 2.4 and 4.0? The '05 6 speed has issues as well where they upgraded the '06 to fix these issues.
If it was me I would sell the 4 cyl and buy a 6 cyl Jeep and in the long run would save you money, headaches and TIME!!!

It's a commonly asked question since people are looking for ways to increase power in the Wrangler they love.

The reality is that it's "custom" and those that have done it state that its about the same effort to swap in a Magnum v8...."not plug-n-play, but do able with fabrication and money".

Ok thanks for that. Not as simple as I thought or hoped it might be. I will have to consider other options.

To get the most out of the 2.5:

* install a high-flow intake & headers
* replace the fan & shroud with an electric fan
* re-gear the differentials

I'm about to do the swap out as well, but if you are going to go through the trouble of doing the swap you might as well go for something bigger, wranglers are common for having Chevy 5.3's in them, and they are really reliable motors, like tanks, I would suggest a 5.3 instead of a 4.0, better pay off in the end. But a donor car like me and you have almost every part you need right there.
