TJ A/C Refrigerant

the a/c on my tj is not getting cold and i think it is because i need to refill the refrigerant. does anyone know what type it takes? also,i rarely ever use the a/c could that be why it needs to be recharged?? FTW: 2005 X, 6 cyl, auto 65K mi. (if that helps)

R134a is what it requires. But if your a/c is not working from low refrigerant pressure, there's a leak. The a/c compressor does not "consume" refrigerant so if it's low, it has leaked out. My '97 TJ's a/c still runs fine and it has never been recharged. I'd take it to an a/c shop and have them find the leak which they can do fairly easily with a UV dye they insert in with the refrigerant

thanks for the help jerry. that was the answer i was afraid of. it didn't make sense to me that after only 4 years it would be low.
