TJ DIY Advice

Total newbie here.

I've always wanted a Jeep and just bought a 1997 TJ Sport, 4.0, 5spd, 107k, soft upper doors, tilt, sound-bar, stock height, dark green - $4k.

Seems pretty straight, clean undercoating, skids are in good shape, steering leak, runs quiet.

Here are the areas I need some advice:
  • Top is trash - who makes the best replacement top under $400?
  • Should I stay black top or go tan/spice?
  • No carpet - DIY rhino-line or carpet kit?
  • Wheels - rusted out chromes w/worn 31x10.5's - got some 1995 aluminums that are average w/no rubber (wheel stud's seem short)...
  • Wear/faded around the nose (bra maybe) - Krylon the plastic?
  • Back seat is intact, but has been wet for a long time - cover it?

Great forum. Thanks for your help!

if its your dd I would put carpet in it, but you can have some serious fun with rhino lined floors, IMO I like tan tops on green jeeps, get some black steelies, take out your backseat give it a good wash down with some pressure and suck it all out with a wet vac, lift that thing and have some fun
congrats on the Jeep man
welcome to this forum, lots of nice experienced Jeepers here, you can learn alot
don't forget to wave at other Jeeps, check out the Jeep wave thread on general discussion

sounds like a nice jeep bro. tan on green is the way to go. black looks good on green but the tan pops and looks classy. its my favorite color combo other than teal/black lol.

+1 on taking the seat out and spraying it down. you can take it down to the carwash and use the shampoo on it.

does it smell like mildew?

sand those rims that are on it down, and spray paint em black.

do the key dance to check for codes.

turn the key on.. not all the way on, but the last click before your actually starting it. turn it all the way off.

do this 3 times within 5 seconds and then wait. after all the dash lights go off you should see some numbers on the odometer, and the check engine light will flash. keep an eye on it.. it might show numbers, it might not.

write the numbers down and let us know.

and i would do por-15 or some diy on the floors, then carpet on top. best of both worlds.

top- cant say enough good things about besttop. i have one on my 97, black, the basic stock replacement top. it does what it should and looks good.

you can also find them used on craigslist cheap, or on ebay.. but you never know what your gonna get with a used top, unless the guy will help you install it right there when you buy it before you agree to pay.

definately go with tinted rear windows, and also try to get a sunrider top. it folds back kinda like a sunroof. very cool.

post some pics of your ride!

Pix of my project

Here are a couple of pix. Thanks for the advice. I just ordered the spice top with tinted windows from Morris 4x4 Center. Got 10% off with a code from this site.

spray paint will become your friend
spray the bottom with rustoleum, a cheaper way to rino is truck bed linear by 3m its a rubber compound in a gold can, 3 cans will do the whole jeep this is intense stuff so be careful, the 3m runs about 8 a can(they do have off brands) you can get it at advance.

take the tires off and sand the rim down this is way to go !!!!! its time consuming but really fun spray paint them with automotive enamel/ primer. i have seen those rims blacked out before they look nice and its cheap!!

Get some krylon fission and paint the flares. also if your feeling daring you can paint the center console and the dash.

Back seat hit that with some Bleach then neoprene seat covers are the way to go they are a big splurge but they fit awesome and if you have pets, go to the beach, hunt or mud, you'll love them.

Im not a fan of carpet it always gets dirty and if its gets wet it smells.

ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!

Mine was rhino lined on the inside, but mine is my dd as well so I put a carpet kit in it. I am in Colorado and that made a big difference in temp in the Jeep. Welcome, and nice Jeep.

I'd rather polish the rims. Black rims on big black tires.. a bit boring in my opinion.. Shinny polished rims on big black tires stands out more. It stands out and says here i am baby.. llloooovvveee meeeeee :P

Here is a ghetto rig but it really help keep my old jeep warm in the springs i put Great Stuff the insulation in a can, i put it in the door just pop off the paneling and there is usually nothing behind there expect the door handle spray it back there and you have an insulted door!!! this is depending on the year the i had a 98 so it works on older jeeps i dont know about the newer ones. make sure not to get it on the door equipment i just see that being bad.

Update

It's April and here's what I've done...
Painted the steel part of the bumpers with the rattle-can bedliner, painted the flares and bumper ends with plastic-black.
New cooling system, new spice top, new carpet, scrubbed seats, new front brakes, 1995 wheels and stock sized tires.
