TJ electrical Question

Question for the TJ guru's here .. Driving along, and all of a sudden the radio, cigar lighter, wipers, and turn signals go out.. It seems like when I change something it turns off. IE: Start it up in the morning, (everything is working ) turn on the wipers and everything out out. It also happens when I turn on a turn signal. And the really neat thing is that it dosen't happen all the time. Drove today all over, got to the house and before I could shut it off, everything went out again.. One more thing, When everything goes out, all I have to do to get it back on is to restart the truck. Doesn't matter if I'm moving or not.. Please help....

Thanks ...

That's what I was thinking, so I got under the hood and wiggled all of the relays that I found in the main disp. panel box.. I thought I fixed it, because like I said , I drove all over the place today. Then it happened again in the drive way....

I am a more simple person...actually had a conversation with a guy at work today who said that his GF car windows didn't work ...just sometimes. He jumped her car this am 'cause the battery was dead/ weak. She replaced the battery and surprise radio sounds better windows work fine......All I am saying is have you checked the basics?

Check for loose or "bad cables"? Had battery checked? Probably not a charging issue but it wouldn't hurt to check....have heard that TJs can't be "jumped" and ran on a dead battery...if your alternator is "weak"...I learned enough in the Air Force as a Radar Tech about electrical..to ALWAYS check the basics first. Good Luck!!

You might have something there... I just replaced the battery about a month ago and also just replaced the fuel pump in the tank.. (that was fun ). That's the only recent things that has been done... Have to look into that...

You need to find what all those circuits have in common...ground or power source. With your symptoms I would say a ground problem. They all have a good enough ground until you turn something on. Try and find if they share a ground somewhere. AS stated before think simple is good advice.

As I think about it. I really don't think it's a power issue because all the items that go out have seperate fuses. Also there are other things on the inside fuse panel that don't go out. Is there a relay that runs these items ? cigar lighter, wipers, radio, turn signals ? These are the only things that go out. And like I said, I only have to turn off the key then back on again and everything is working again. And it doesn't happen every time I turn something on. It's strange....

Take the plastic off around the steering column, the switch is behind where your key goes, the part is cheap. I got mine from Napa.
