TJ engine cuts out around 100 mph

My TJ Rubicon cuts out at high speed and at high RPM. I am assuming it has some sort of rev limiter installed at the factory. I was looking at performance chips and was wondering if they really do increase power and save fuel and if they would prevent this temporary shut down from occurring.

I don't know. I had mine turning 7500 Rpm's at 145 MPH. So I don't know what is wrong with yours. Oh wait, are we talking Firebirds or Wranglers??? You want more HP and speed, buy something else.

PS. ya, there is a rev limiter and top speed set by the computer.

I have something else that goes a LOT faster, but I could always use more horsepower in my Jeep. It's kind of hairy going that fast in the Jeep anyway, since the hood starts flapping like it wants to lift off.

you trying to make the KOH LCQ or something. I think superchips has a tuner that will remove the factory set speed limiter.

Not a rev limiter. That's all she's got. And by god if I would ever go that fast in my jeep.

The only way you'll get what you're looking for is to have your motor stroked, then bolt on a compressor/blower.= thousands of donero... Otherwise you'll spend many hundreds of dollars,, for maybe 10 to 15 more HP.

quoted for the brake down....

1. the engine isnt made to go over 100mph, shes cutting off because thats all she has in her... this also isnt good for your engine becuase basicly its fuel starved and at that much stress load you really dont want to do that. this is why cars have rev limiters and speed limiters (i call them grannys, or granny caps).

2. if your trying to get more out of your jeep you want tunners/piggy backs/ or some engine management. DO NOT BUY SOME EBAY CHIP..or even a lot of sites sell chips for well into the 100$ + range that are compleatly bull crap and do nothing for you... what did i say? DO NOT buy a "chip"

3. you put two things together that dont go together... add power and batter fuel econ. this doesnt happen.. if your looking to buy anything and they say it does both they are full of crap and its prolly not worth buying. are their ways to increase power and provide better fuel, yes you can but that happens when many factors are put into place not one sole thing. basicly if you want more power your going to be giving up fuel economy for the most part.

4. if you want to add more "power" to your jeep you have to break this down a little further and as yourself, do you want top end power or get up and go power.. when modding something that is heavy you tend to lean to the TQ more then the HP aspect of build... i want things that will get me up and going.. vs. the HP is more of a top end keep me going power..

i think i said enough so far... hope it helps

My Porsche Targa does excellent cutting across those mountain passes, but can anyone reccomend how I can get 6-12 inches more of ground clearance????? I seem to keep scraping the bottom on those rough patches....

WTF!!! I checked wikipedia and it says the 242 makes more power then the Ford 302 AND SBC......

You better check your facts man... Wikipedia don't lie....
Quote:
...The 1987 RENIX 4.0 made 173 hp (129 kW) and 220 lbft (300 Nm). In 1988, the 4.0 received higher flowing fuel injectors, raising output to 177 hp (132 kW) and 224 lbft (304 Nm)—more power than some configurations of the Ford 302, Chevrolet 305, and Chrysler 318 8-cylinder engines, and more than any of the Japanese 6-cylinder truck engines, but with comparable or superior fuel economy.[17] ...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMC_Straight-6_engine

And you wonder why wikipedia gets a bad rep.... ugh...

LOL! Wow! Now I know people are reading these posts anyway! I don't really want to go any faster I was just curious as to why this was happening. Crazy is a matter of opinion - on some roads you will get blown away going that "slow"! Mr. bc3 Jeep, the Porche Cayenne has adjustable ground clearance, but you might have to fiddle with the computer because the default highway speed setting automatically drops the vehicle to a lower setting. The new Grand Cherokee's suspension has a similar function, but it's nowhere near as fast as the Porche.

You will not get blown away on any road minus the autobahn going 100mph. And he was being sarcastic about it because it too was a ridiculous question

My six cylinder BMW 335i is governed at 140, but it also has twin turbos and 300hp. Just a little faster than my Jeep I just don't think I would want to be in a Jeep going more than 100!

With the windshield folded down it will get up to top speed faster, but it won't increase the top speed.
Thanks KevinWarren for the link...the Hood Latch Kit will certainly come in handy!

I do know that my cruise control will not hold it at any speed faster than 87 miles an hour which is right around 75 with my tires. My Porsche didn't have a limiter, but I only got that one up to 125. Not bad for a 4 banger.
