So my stepdad got a little drunk last night and tried shooting a skunk that sprays us in our lawn. So when I woke up this morning i saw this from my front stoop. I was freaking out and no i have to fix it (funded my stepdad). I figure ill drill out the pellet sand around the area, bondo the little dent and hole, prime, sand, base coat, sand, clear coat, wet sand. I just want to hear some input from anyone who had a similar problem or has any tips. Although I know the basics of all this stuff if anyone has any specifics thatd be great too, thanks
Sucks that it is so close to the body-line too. Sounds like you are on the right track, but I don't think I would bother with the drill first. Just a little heat and something to pick the pellet out, and sand the dimple in a manner that will give your putty something to grab onto. You can buy 2 part polyester in small quantities to keep the price down. Be thoughtful on how much finish sanding you do. It's pretty easy, even for an amateur bodyman, to lay down paint considerably smoother than the factory surface. It will be very noticeable and you'll end up having to flat sand and buff the entire side.
Im curious if anyone has any specific brands of primer/ clear coat and what grit i should use to sand the primer and clear coat after applied I already found the exact paint color in a aerosol can.
I do not understand gangsta. Why would anybody like to look like a criminal?
I would point this damage out to my sd and see if he might share the cost of a proper repair. I would also not go hunting with him. Maybe he is trying to tell you something, indirectly?
The Tough Stuff door panel appliqué is a nice piece and I have them on my Jeep but not to hide a bullet hole.
Shoot the stepdad! he did the damage make him pay for it! If he's old enough to be a stepdad he's old enough to take responsibility for his actions!
I got the jeep not even 3 weeks ago, i went outside to start cleaning my wheels for plasti dip and found this. I contemplated marching upstairs with the pellet gun and try to get some revenge for my poor jeep as for the tough stuff vinyl, I never liked the look of those, i feel like it makes it look more stock then it already is. I dont know how to explain it. Plus i already ordered matched paint in a 12 oz aerosol can with primer and clear coat, bondo, and got 400 grit and 2000 grit sandpaper for sanding primer and clearcoat at my stepdads expense. No I should charge him 200 bucks for labor for the time it takes me to fix. I hope it isnt too noticeable, im usually very good with spray paint but ive never done any work on a car other then bedline my bumpers and mirrors. Wish me luck guys
I agree with SD paying for the fix. If he does, he will be remembered as the guy who stepped up (no pun intended) and did the right thing rather than the guy who damaged his kids Jeep.
On another topic, I like that Gammo Varmint and may have to purchase this.
Good Luck!
I'd drill it out and weld the hole with the welder your stepdad will buy you. Then you can learn to weld and fill it with bondo and repaint with the paint sprayer he will buy you. It'll be cheaper than paying someone to do it and you'll learn a lot of new skills
so far hes paid for all the paint were going for bondo and sanding supplies tomorrow, body shop down the street wanted 600 bucks to fix it. Will bondo be enough for the hole left in the center on the dent. It is maybe 5/16 of an inch.
i dont know if theres a right up on here about bullet hole/dent repair if not ill try to do a write up on the process with pictures, idk if its necessary because youtube exists but i feel as a new member to contribute somehow to the forum
Hopefully you are using bondo as a term for body filler. I wouldn't use real bondo on anything. Go to a paint and body supply shop and buy a good filler that will not shrink, or crack. Only use it after pulling the dent out as far as possible and filling any hole.
To the OP, most all of us agree he should pony up the $$, but you know he won't or just can't, and that's the reality. I suggest you ask for and take the repair advice of the kind folks here to do repairs yourself. If you haven't already, join the local Jeep club in your area or the WF thread and see if someone there can lend you a hand and some expertise. I admire your work ethic and wish you the best.
I seen a few skunks in my life but never one as tall as a door of a Jeep. Sounds like he needs to use his beer money to get his screw up fixed professionally. I bet your Mom could convince him to Man Up.
An inexperienced person trying to pound that out is going to make a royal mess out of that door. If you have to do it yourself just fill it. Right now its a small pellet hole, pounding it out is going to warp several inches around the spot. Warpage is a royal bitch to straighten out. Metal that has been stretched like that has to be shrunk back into shape, that takes experience and technique.
Also you'll never get an original type finish out of a spray can. I can usually even spot where a pro has sprayed body damage with good equipment, unless they're very good. Without taking this to a shop you're going to have a door thats obviously been damaged and repaired.
Theres no pounding that out, youd be lucky to get a dolly in behind that. Only sanitary fix is a stud gun and a couple studs, some quality body filler, some good 2k fill primer, sealer, basecoat and clear, and im not talking about that crap that you already have ordered. Dont forget the sandpaper, gonna need some 80 grit, 150, 180, 220, 320, and some 400 dry for prep then some 800 -1000 wet for clear prep and then some more 1000 grit to sand out all the runs, dirt, and orange peel then more color and clear. Dont forget masking paper and tape, and not that roll of masking tape your D-bag step dad has in his tool belt. Im talking stuff that cost 4-8$ a roll. Send all that garbage you just got back and make the TOOL pay to have it fixed by a reputable shop. $600 is a little steep imho, but a lesson well learned. FYI, I paint cars for a living and im a gun nut also. The last skunk i saw big enough to leave shot marks from a pellet gun woulda been "Pepe Le-Pew". Make the drunk idiot pay for it.
