tj sputtering when cold

my jeep developed a nasty habit this week. it'll start and idle fine, but when i start to go, it'll sputter before i get to shift in second. i'll push in the clutch, and give it a little gas, and it'll seem ok, but when i release the clutch, it'll sputter again.

i've replaced the plugs, and cleaned the iac, but still getting the same problem. tonight, i just started it and let it idle. once it reached about 160 *F, the idle became unsteady. it'll drop down below 500, and seem like it'll stall, but then it kicks back up to around 800. it'll do this until it reaches operating temp, and then it starts behaving normally. :?

next on my list are cap, rotor, and wires.

anybody else experience something like this? if so, how'd you fix the problem?

tia

No check engine light? Seems like that would come on instantly. Once warmed up it will run fine or still sputter? Sounds more like a fuel problem than ignition. Possibly an 02 sensor or MAP sensor.

Easy thing to do is take some carb/throttle cleaner and clean out the throttle body really well.

I am having this same issue lately with my 4.0 automatic. When I put the ting in gear it acts like 1 cylinder is completely not firing until i press te gas pretty hard to go. I checked all the plugs and they look brand new. I checked compression and am good on all 6. I am leaning towards fuel injectors next.

By the way.. remember my starting issue that we determined was teh fuel sending unit??? Turns out that there is a recall on that very part in my Wrangler and the dealership is fixin it free.

no check engine light. once warmed up, the problem goes away, which is why i think fuel delivery and o2 sensors are ok.

only thing i did prior to the problem was disconnect the battery and re-route my winch wires. that shouldn't cause any problems. cleaning the throttle body never hurts, so i'll do that today, as well.

Make sure the wires you re routed are grounded properly first. A bad ground anywhere can cause odd problems.

no problems there. just 2 big wires, connected directly to the battery terminals.

Similar problem going on in my 97 - but when WARM.

First start to go is fine, let the jeep sit for 10 min - couple hours, go to leave and George is sputtering like crazy - give him gas and he sputters a little more then runs fine.

Any suggestions?

=====
Edited to add - no check engine light and no codes.

Emi don't count out the O2 sensor just yet. Yours sounds like you might be running lean when cold.

JCZ this could be your problem as well but running slightly rich when warm.
You could also have injector seepage when the engine is warm and shutdown.

Sometimes the O2 will not all together fail so it could be going bad but not enough to trip the light.

If OBD II the Upstream O2 is usually the culprit. Unless you have a scanner hooked to the comp it is hard to diagnose an o2.

Thanks Odhinn. We'll give that a go.
Appreciate the input as sputter causes me great panic.

In the van it'd be ok, but NOT THE JEEP!!!

Just an update, replaced the O2 Sensor (upflow) and the sputtering at start up ceased but still sputtered when getting up to speed in the 45-50 MPH range. Replaced the pick up coil (whatever that is) and things are running SMOOTH.
