I just noticed of my set of steel rims, three have an inner lip at the hub. I scavenged these rims from different sources thinking they were all the same and just threw some tires on them.
My hub caps are still at home so haven't checked to make sure they all fit the same. I just checked and backspacing is the same and they look identical everywhere else. Any issues you think running these mixed?
I tried googling up what the differences might be, anyone know? Perhaps just earlier vs later or some from an XJ?
Well I can now confirm the hubcaps mount the same on both and once on you can't see the flange so they then look identical in every way. I'm curious though what the different rims are from. And if I should look for replacements for the two I have without the inner flange lip.
The hubcaps fit fine as they clip over the lug nuts which are in the same position (they haven't moved).
I am curious about the color. Obviously they have been repainted, but did you blast or sand any of the older paint off? Did any of the wheels show any signs of being silver originally? The steel wheels on both the Cherokee and Wrangler when produced by AMC were white. The center caps were black plastic with a raised edge around the outside of the center portion and the word JEEP on the inside. The word Jeep and the raised ridge had silver plating on the plastic in those areas. When Chrysler took over, the wheels became argent silver and the silver plating on the center caps discontinued so they were all black and very plain.
Keep in mind that AMC in that period was referred to as All Motors Company, for they bought parts from everyone and would change suppliers in the middle of a production run, sometimes the same model year had different parts in the same location. Late CJ-7 owners had to take the serial number in with them to make sure the had the right part. Remember the XJ started production for the 84 model year and the YJ for the 87 model year. The first model year produced under Chrysler owner ship was 1989.
There may be some stampings on them to give you a clue. If they are all 15x7, have the same back spacing and all fit and function the same, I would not worry about it. If you were going to enter a concours with your Jeep, you might loose some points for wheels not being 100% correct for that particular model year. But who would enter a functional Jeep in a concours?
The ones with a lip are stamped 98 and the ones without are 00. Nothing here from a CJ or YJ. They are all identical shades of silver with the same silver hubcaps and in original paint. The ones with a more more pronounced lip are identical to the rusty ones I took of my 97 wrangler and those were stamped 97. The ones without the lip have to be from some 2000 Jeep. Same 15x7, and same Chrysler stamping on the inside.
Maybe it's just the picture, but the hole in the one without the lip doesn't quite seem round. Is it possible that someone cut the lip off for some odd reason? The 4 of those I have on my Eagle all have the lip.
The construction overall looks a little different too... Humph.
Yeah both styles mount identically to the hub, and use the lug nuts to center. And hub caps mount same on both styles as well. So I'll just be using a mixed set for now. Once the hubcap is on as you can see you can't tell the difference.
