"Can you?"

Yes you can but it takes money.

You can put what ever tranny you want in it if you have the resources and all the parts to make it happen.

What 4speed are you wanting to put in it?

I want to put a 350 in my 97 tj wrangler. I researched some and was told i needed to get a AX15 tranny. My question is does it matter what year it is and what jeep model it comes out of??? I know alot of folks have done this swap so i hope someone can help me. Local junk yard has a few I just want to get the right one. Thanks

Who told you that???

You can get adapters for the AX-15 to a GM350 motor but I wouldn't recommend it.

If your swapping in a 350 go with something stronger. SM465, 4L60 ...Some thing that will last behind that motor.

The AX15 should bolt right onto the I6 motor. As it is the exact same one that is bolted to the NV3550

I have a 99 tj with an i6 and the 3 speed tranny and wouldn't mind putting in the 4 speed. Can I do that as a straight swap and do I have to do anything to the computer.

I would bet that you would want to grab the computer and harnesses too. Though don't quote me on that

The 10 spline input refers to the input shaft of the transmission that mates to the engine.

Here is my NV3550 input shaft while doing a clutch replacement.

And the 23 spline output refers to the rear shaft that mates to the transfer case.

Here is an image of a AX15 output shaft I grabbed from Novak Conversions

And here is the input shaft of a trans-case

I think as long as its coming from a 4cly,same year cherokee you should be good. I want to say you may have to change the an input gear(can't recall the correct term atm, sorry) have you also looked on car-parts.com?

Trying to get the 100% computer controlled 42RLE 4-speed automatic working in a 2002 or older TJ would be like trying to get Android working on a dial-up telephone.

i guess that's a big now way then.......the only way to go to the 4spd trans would be a complete engine and trans swap to the 4L then huh???

thanks for your quick reply...

thanks ! I called the local jeep dealer today to ask what fluid to put in my tranny. I gave him the vin number and he told me I had an ax-5? I don't know the diff, but i believe you over him, he didn't sound very confident, and he put me on hold to ask someone else !
I have a 6cyl 4.0L 2001 wrangler sport 5 speed manual tranny. your info says the ax-5 was for 4cyl? anyhow, i trust you guys over them, so thanks for the info.

ax15's for the 6 cyclinders.
but both transmissions ask the same fluid GL-4 75w90
Redline MT-90 would be a good choice.

If you have a 2001 5 spd, you have the NV3550 transmission.
