TJU running great, suddenly died and now won't start

Longtime; first time.

2006 TJU w/4.0l, auto. Never had a hiccup. Backing out of garage it stalled w/o warning and wouldn't re-start. Battery is strong, motor cranks over as usual but does not even try to start/run. I've checked the obvious wire connections and even replaced - one by one - the CKS, CMS and MAP sensor already. (All from stealer - Ouch!). Still no start. It has the coil rail but I can't find any info on checking spark/coil function for this setup. (I doubt, however, it is an individual coil or plug problem because was running fine and suddenly died. Never ran crappy. I think it would also be unlikely for enough coils/plugs to fail at the same time to cause no-start.) I checked all of the wires for wear and burn but no obvious indications. I also tried wiggling and flexing the wires and junctions. No go. Any ideas how to test coil rail? (I have is a digi-meter.)

There is no Schrader on the fuel rail so I haven't been able to test fuel pressure but I can hear the pump charge when the key is first turned on and priming the throttle body with some fresh gas made no difference. This makes me think the problem is electrical and not fuel-related.)

No codes were posted until after a dozen or so attempts to start it. Then p0522 started showing up and after several more attempts to start, p0123.

Are there other sensors/switches critical to ignition that should be ruled out before having it towed? (I hate seeing CJs/YJs on the hook, especially mine. Makes me sad.)

A bit aggravated. Any thoughts are much appreciated.

Thanks for listening.

I'm having the same exact issue with my 2006 TJ, Too. Did you figure out what was causing it?

I have an LJ. So this post is dear to my heart !

Maybe that will help ?

Also, you said you can hear the fuel pump charging, but it is actually getting fuel from the tank ? Did you try letting it feed from an external source, and measure before/after ?

No start Update

So I towed the LJ to a dealer who at least had decent on-line reviews. Service Mgr. said it would be $180.00 to diagnose and then I could decide whether or not to have them do the repair. I agreed and their tech determined the fuel pressure was not sufficient and a new pump was needed.

Dealer quote was $680.00 to replace the fuel pump, but the diag charge would be applied so - as much as I hated it - for another $500.00, I had them do it. They were fair and charged only what was quoted.

I should note, however, that about a week later I am now getting code P2096. At least it starts now and seems to run fine.

Thanks for the input.

There is a TSB to reflash the PCM for ’05, not sure if it applies to ’06 but also can be caused by exhaust leaks & maybe even O2 sensors or catalytic converters. That is not very specific but what I have seen on this. I would reset the light (disconnect the battery) & see if it comes back before worrying too much about it. Then check the exhaust for leaks, especially at the head for loose bolts. (Disregard the off topic gas cap posts.)
