Toe Out Anyone?

I just installed Currie Currectlync steering on my 06 TJ. I called Currie to ask what they run on their TJs. The tech on the phone told me he recommended 1/8" toe out, as he had set up many TJs in the past with this steering and followed with a toe out alignment. Has anyone run toe out and seen proper wear on tires, proper handling? I know 1/8" toe in is "norm" and i have used that on my previous TJ...

1/8 sounds right. I've always set ATV's & dirt race cars we run @ 1/8 "out"

I've heard of others running a little toe out on their Jeeps. I haven't tried that, but am currently running 0 (parallel), and haven't had any issues.

I'm guessing he meant "toe out" as a generic term, and actually mean 1/8" toe-in, as in the front of the tires are closer than the back. I've never heard of actually running the running toe out on a TJ.

The usual toe-in setting for a TJ is 1/16" to 1/8" of toe-in. That is what should be used by the vast majority of us.

An unusual condition that can sometimes be helped by a little toe-out as the Currie representative suggested is when Death Wobble is occurring & not easily tamed. Using a little toe-out like that can help until the root-cause of the Death Wobble can be determined & fixed.

But for the typical TJ without a DW problem, I'd run (and do run) the usual 1/16" to 1/8" amount of toe-in.

Like i had posted, i understand and have used the normal 1/8" TOE IN, i was simply asking for input from people who have RUN TOE OUT, as stated above...

We understood, just stating that running toe out isn't normal or recommended. Do you have some sort of issue you're trying to fix by running toe out?

No not at all, i was actually surprised to hear the Currie guy recommend toe out. That's why i thought I'd ask more people of they'd run toe out (minimal 1/8"). I've run the 1/8" in with no problems and now have it set 1/8" out with no problems. I do not have any DW, and as most of you know, TOE is not the correct way to fix DW....

The reason that the Normal setting is "toed-in" 1/16 to 1/8 or the factory setting of 0.09 degrees to 0.21 degrees toe-in is because this is a static setting with no load on the suspension or steering components.
When driving down the road normal loads remove clearance from the steering components and the Toe will move close to 0 Toe decreasing tire wear and rolling resistance.
Setting a vehicle to a static setting with Toe-Out causes the vehicle to become even more toed-out when driven and the components are loaded. Increasing tire wear and rolling resistance.

Toe-Out is used in some racing instances to help the vehicle transition from a straight line to a turning situation much quicker and easier but if you've ever watched any form of Oval or Road Racing these guys throw on new tires every chance they get and have very little concern for tire wear.

And yes Toe-Out can be used as a bandaid to help Death Wobble it masks it by loading the steering and suspension components while driving. Much better to find the true cause of DW than to "Band-Aid" it.

Now for an "Offroad Only Vehicle" operated on loose surfaces Toe out can help stabilize the steering and give the driver better Feel.

This.

I ran about 1/8 - 1/4 inch toe out on my autocross car... and it's a good thing I had no concern for tire wear. Turn-in was fantastic, but my experience with jeeps is that there is very little turn in at all, regardless what the driver does.

I would never run those settings for anything other than competition.

The guy at my local 4x4 shop sets it up with a little toe out as well. I was skeptical as I had no death wobble or other problems, but when he set mine up it rode great. I'm going on six months and don't notice any excessive tire wear or anything.

I was told that when they had it aligned before I got it that they set it to something like 1 degree toe out and that confused me. Nothing seems loose in the front end so would you suggest that I go and re align it with the toe in?

Yes. As said many times above, toe-in is the proper factory setting. Not toe-out.

Generally speaking, toe-out is for front-wheel drive vehicles, toe-in is for rear-wheel drive vehicles like the Wrangler.

I just put on new tires ,tie rod.drag link tre,s had toe set to 0.19 . now I have dw? never had it before( did take off steering damper as I thought I may not need it now) is this correct toe ? should I put damper back on? before I had toe set there was no dw.

well I thought I wouldn't need the stabilizer with all the new steering,I was wrong still helps a lot..
