Took off the milk jugs today

Took me a while to get the bottom screws out too, had to hack saw one off, but I really thing I just decreased the total weight of the Jeep by at least 30 lbs cause those baby's were FULL of wet beach sand, and mud. Now to fab some end caps to either weld or bolt on.

You can get some flat ones from your nearest jeep dealership. I got mine for about $8 for a pair or somthing around there.

took my fronts off awhile back, still haven't messed with putting "caps" on the bumper.

Does look better w/o the jugs that's for sure. I considered removing the rear, but to me the rear bumper looks too narrow if u do that.

Thanks for the pictures and links guys, but instead of spending $8 a piece at the dealer or $89 for all 4 online, since I work in a welding shop anyway, why not just make my own out of some scrap flat stock 3/16 " thick? and tack them on here at home?
Or for that matter if I can get ahold of a 2X4 piece of square Hell, I'll make the whole rear bumper and front bumper, I never know how easy a Jeep bumper really was to take off until I looked under it taking the jugs off. 4 bolts on each and their gonna drop right off Making what I want for this Jeep is as much fun as getting a model train for Christmas

I like your idea of doing some fabbing. Why not. But in case you decide to go with the plastic caps from the stealer, here's a couple pics of mine.

Do you have a part number for the ones from the dealer? I like the front ones. Thanks.

I don't have it offhand, but if you goto the dealer, and tell them you need the bumper caps off a 2006 X model you'll be good to go.

Put the old "milk jugs" on Craigslist. I sold mine for $15 a pair. Somebody with a "street Jeep" will want them.

I thought about that, but the bolt lugs are rusted and need replacing and there's some broken plastic under there too, so I will have to do some plastic melting before I sell them,

Yes either that or a 2004 but not a 2005. For some reason, they don't have them under the 2005 catalog. It took a while for my dealer to figure out where they were, but we found em.

I stopped by the dealer on Friday and ordered up a full set of 4 of the small end caps. Cost just shy of $40 for all 4 from a '06 Wrangler X. According to the fiche they are an option, and the fiche shows both of them.

According to the dealer, the part numbers for the low profile caps are:
55078138AA End Cap $4.95EA 2 EA
55078139AA End Cap $12.43EA 2 EA

I like the milk jugs. Ugly yes, but more than once they've saved my sides and corners from sliding into a rock or something. They crush, sometimes bounce back, sometimes too far gone. I think I've replaced 4 or 5 of them.

I get them from folks that don't like them - for free.

I guess you could use a hole saw to drill a hole bottom side to let the water and mud out.

Ditch the front jugs and keep the rears. The rears protect the body as the fronts do not a whole lot.

Both of you have valid ideas, where I work I can get a piece of 2x4 square out of the scrap bin and make my own, and I think my welder can handle the welding part, Or I could always just bolt them on, anything has to be more protection that the plastic milk jugs I took off. But if I go that route and I find a piece that's long enough I might just make my own rear bumper

Yea I'd like to have something out to the end of the tires if I could, but I really ain't into teh plastic on a bumper thing. So I'm gonna check tomorrow and see how much I have at work, if I build a gate that one of the schools wants I should have two pieces left over that are 2' long each, that would be thrown away, so....if I yank them outta the metal dumpster before I leave work I can literally have steel bumper extensions made and pics up bu Monday, and probably installed a few days later ( expecting some rain or snow dunno which) All I need is a piece of 4x4 flat for the ends and my 110 buzz box here at home

That actually made enough sense that I went and put my rear jugs back on

Personally I could be wrong, but I don't see how that little piece of plastic could save the back corner, it seems to me like its there more for cosmetics that protection, I see plastic all day that's crunched it all the way with the metal behind it totally smashed too. I think I'm going to try to build my own extensions, out to the edge of the body panels. depends on weather or not I can get the right square I measuerd iit today at work it came out a little more than 4x2 so I think it might be 4 1/2" inch by 2 1/2"

I was in a McDonalds drive thru rounding the curve when my foot slipped off the clutch and the front left side of my bumper bumped the vehicle in front of me. At the time I had my front end caps on and there was no damage to their mini van. I imagine without them it would have dug into it pretty good.
Of course I still took 'em off at a later time, kept the rear ones on and just try not to be such a clutz

That's why when I go through a drive thru even though I have a auto, I use either N or Park. But then you will VERY rarely catch me eating any fast food at all, ever since my wife got St certified as a food handler manager and passed the safe serve classes I've been scared to eat at McDonald's or other fast food places, cause I see the VDH website hits they all take now. So I may never need the fronts again

It's more of a buffer than a protector. The plastic will crumple for sure, but it will crumple around the tub without much if any damage to the tub at all. If you had nothing there at all, the tub will be damaged, and that's a real expensive repair. No, they will not protect the body 100%, but it's a good buffer. The only way I'd remove my rear jugs is it I finally install my rear corner guards or buy an aftermarket bumper that is just as wide as the body.
