Tranny fluid and tires......

2 quick questions....first, since I'm laid up for awhile, I thought I'd do some maintenance to the old girl. So I'm gonna change all her fluids. While I was in Afghanistan, my dad did drive her every week, so the battery stayed charged and the fluids did get circulated. However, he didn't do any maintenance. Does anyone have a personal preference when it comes to auto tranny fluid? Anything out there that's supposed to be just STELLAR? Ok, that's my question. I also told a friend I'd ask a question for him as well. He's in the market for some tires and wants to know of some places he can get good deals on tires. I told him about JC Whitney, since they have free shipping, but that's about all I know of, so if any of you out there have any ideas, I'll pass them along.
Thanks in advance....
Jordan

It's real hard to beat something like Valvoline's synthetic ATF+4, which is what I just filled up my new (to me) auto tranny with after the tranny conversion. Aare you talking about a complete flush which is something like 8 quarts? Or are you talking about just dropping the pan and replacing the filter, which is only around 4 quarts?

Tire-wise, I never recommend buying tires over the phone or Internet. When something goes wrong, it can be a PITA to have them taken care of via UPS rather than just going to the tire store you bought them from. And any tire store can generally match or come very close to internet pricing, you just have to ask/push them to.

Are you the one with the PH ankle injury? I'm so old it's hard to keep things like that straight.

Yeah, we all seem to be getting banged up lately.

Do you wheel it hard or just dd and some offroad? Unless you hit it pretty hard the recommended stuff will work just fine.

Yep, that's me. That's my second PH.....gonna have to stop getting deployed, but it's so much fun!! BTW, the surgeon was happy with how the leg/ankle/foot went back together....so that's good news!!

Just gonna drop the pan and replace the filter and fluid. I'll check into the Valvoline ATF+4.

Thanks!

Huh? I "hit it pretty hard" and the synthetic Valvoline ATF+4 was actually chosen for that reason. Jeep trannies are fussy about the ATF they get, you have to be careful about the ATF you select.

Great news, I'm really glad your surgery went well. Wow, two PHs. I managed to make it out of Vietnam unscathed, my hat's off to you.

I know you do. Didn't know about him.

You have to keep it in the tranny for it to work anyway!!!

Through 34 years of perpetual motion, I think my luck is beginning to falter. I should take this last PH to heart and think about throwing in the towel.....but we'll see how this latest injury heals. I hate Army life in garrison. I love being deployed where I can do the work I've been trained to do. Can't do it legally in the States........

I too am not big on tires from web sites, check out Sams club, BJ's Wholesale, Costco. They have pretty good prices even after coughing up the membership fee for the year. I bought 4 BFG AT/KO's for my XJ a couple of months ago for like $110 a tire, mounted, balanced, tax and roadhazard out the door.
By the time you buy the tires online, get them shipped then have to take them to a shop that will do the M&B, here pay a $5 per tire disposal fee on the old tires it's just not worth it when you add in your time running around.

You make a good point. Right now he's just trying to get an idea what a good set of MT tires are going for. I think he's wanting 33's, but he might be wanting 35's. He's got an old CJ-5 that he's done a spring-over conversion to, so it'll fit 35's. Problem is the axles probably won't hold up for too long with 35's, that's why I think he's looking for the 33's. I'll pass some of this info along.....in fact, I think he's already got a membership to Sam's Club, so that might be an option for him.
