tranny shuddering

So I am getting some early signs of something. My tranny isnt slipping at all, but if i am stopped and have it in first gear with the clutch in, and i start to roll slowly backwards like at a light or something, the whole jeep starting shuddering and kinda sounds like chugga-chugga-chugga etc. It has happened three or four times while stopped at a light with the clutch in and foot on the brake and not moving at all, but it happens almost everytime that i let her start rolling backwards, but only while in first with the clutch in and rolling backwards, not while it is in reverse and rolling backwards. Anyone have an idea what this could be a sign of? btw it is a 99 sahara with 4.0l 5spd and only 50,000 miles.

it sounds more like a clutch or master or slave cylinder issue..

Obviously this is something that needs to be taken care of, but is it just an early sign or is my jeep telling to take care of this problem immediately?

I would get it looked at if you travel your clutch could just decide its had enough and leave you stranded.. If that happens turn the jeep off put it in 2nd gear turn jeep on without the clutch depressed and take off. shift with out the clutch if you know how and repeat at every stop you have to make and hopefully this will get you home.

i dont think the starting in second gear will work, my jeep wont start even if its in neutral without the clutch in. It also wont go in gear without the clutch in, it will come out of gear but it locks in neutral until you push the clutch. Maybe on the older jeeps it would work, but i have a 99 tj and i dont see it working. I will probably have it looked at as i have a Off road trip in three weeks and i know i am going to be rough on her.

It will work you have to put in a fuse behind the glove box in the slot for auto trans. this will remove the clutch cut off.. It will then start without the clutch this is usually the first thing lots of people do. and it should go into gear with the vehicle off and the clutch not depressed if it doesnt just rock the jeep an inch or so and it will go into gear.. my jeep is also a newer jeep 98 same as yours..

It sounds like you are not very mechanically inclined and maybe you should just take your jeep to a mechanic. Reading the owners manual on the jeep might help too the fuse trick I just told you about is in there.. Do a search for questions you have before posting..

wohoo newb vs newb fight fight fight (not trying to be mean here.. just looking at the number of posts thats all)

coyote99 so when its rolling back, its clinking when in first gear only? How about in neutral? Also shift the tcase to neutral too and let it roll back this way and see if it also makes it.. basically i'm trying to insulate the problem if its in the tcase or tranny or diff or clutch...
