Trans or Clutch Problem 98 ???

I just bought a 98 Wrangler sport with 154,000 on it. I knew when I bought it that I was going to have to do some work but I am not sure if my problem is with the Trans or clutch. The jeep does not always want to go into second gear. I usually have to shift to third from first because it will not go into second. I need some help! please let me know what you think. Thanks

Question I need Help

I am not sure what else you would need to know but I can try to answer any questions. I am new at writing on forums so I am not sure why no one is writing back to me. Please help.

Somethings are hard to diagnose over the internet. For and issue like you are having you might be better off checking with your local mechanic and getting a verdict from them. Once you know for sure what is wrong with it the guys on here might be able to help you with any questions you might have from there. There might be a few guys that could take an educated guess for you on what the problem is but you will still need to take it to a local mechanic to know for sure.

How fast were you trying to shift down into second? BTW I have driven manuals for 6 years now and have never almost ever shift down into first while still moving. So third to first while moving is well like hitting a brick wall. Can you shift up IE- go first to second then to third?

That guess would be synchronizers in the trans I would say.If it shifts fine into first from sitting still and you have no slippage and the pedal take a hold between half and 3 quarters out then the clutch is fine.
I like for it to shine even thought it is muddy most of the time!

Hey thanks for the help! I think it is the synchronizers that are going bad for second gear. I will go to the trans shop and see how much it will cost. Is this something I can buy to do myself? Let me know your thoughts.
