trans or tranfer case broke

went to get a hitch from a guy today in san francisco .the guy lives on a street that goes down hill pulled into a spot and had to back up there was some clunks like it did'nt want to back up . bought the hitch and was leaving drive was fine before we got back on freeway the wife had to pee got back in the jeep thought i would put it in reverse to see if it still made that noise was still there put it back into drive and nothing revved it up a bit and it went in but hard and there was alot of noise underneath. as we coasted i put it in neutral and it stopped the jeep like it was park. i thought oh shit! so 550 dollars and a tow, i got it home now im wondering where to start . could it be my transfer case, does it have a chain inside. will start taking apart on monday start at transfer i guess do a hand check to see if i can turn it and if thats fine start tearing out the trans any thought what it could be thanks for the input already checked to see if my driveshaft spun thinkin it was gears but doesnt turn and put it in 4 wheel and nutin also
