trans problem, fixed but what was the problem

my TJ was sitting for a few months.
I got it in, put it in neutral and started it and then it wouldn't go it gear.
I turned it off, put it in gear and started it. the jeep lurched and shut off.
after that I started it and it went in gear fine and it was back to normal.

Why did it not want to go in gear?

I assume you have a manual trans. Clutch is probably not disengaging due to faulty clutch master or slave cyl. How is the fluid level in the master?

clutch disk was seized to the pressure plate or the flywheel. When it lurched, it broke it loose. It should be fine now.
