Transfer case for 42rle

So I just bought a 2003 wrangler as a project, it has 83000 miles and is rust free from north Carolina which is good for up here in the salt belt, the guy said he was rock crawling and smashed the transfer case and split it In half, it wouldn't start, I took a chance and bought it for a decent price, well the reason it wouldnt start was because the trans was In drive, shifted it into park and it fired right up. Now I need a transfer case, I know I need an np231 23 spline but somewhere I read that the input shaft was shorter for the 42rle or something, is this true or could I get a tcase out of a yj or Cherokee and put it in? If they are longer could I just cut the shaft shorter? Any help would be appreciated.

the input shaft should be 1-3/8" off the mounting face, 23-spline. stick with 95+ t-case. i'd suggest sticking with the TJ series.

FWIW, splitting the case in half is fairly rare, and usually only occurs when you do not maintain the u-joints & double cardan of the front drive shaft. busting it in half rock crawling is pretty hard to do considering the t-case is protected by the skid....you'd have to be driving like a moron and land hard on a driveshaft or something.

Well the front drive shaft was destroyed as well so that could have been the case.
