transfer case question (np 231)

is there a direct t-case swap from a cherokee to a tj? i know they both use the np 231 but wasn't sure about any differences. i'm looking for one for my 97 tj, it's a 23 input spline. i want to go to the local pick-a-part since they have like 50 cherokees and see what i can find. anybody else do a swap like this?

So long as the Cherokee has the same engine and transmission type as yours, it'll be fine. 2.5L and 4.0L 231 t-cases have different spline counts, and the 231 input shaft dimensions are slightly different for an automatic and the 5-speed.

sigh.......went through a bizillion cherokee's and not one manual tranny in any. jerry are you sure about the input shaft dimensions being different from stick to auto? they are both 23 spline. probably a different diameter. the best donor i had found was a 97 cherokee 4.0 sport, aw4 auto, np 231j. mine is a tj sport 4.0, ax15 manual, np 231j. the junkyard said i have to find a tj 97-99. hopefully they are wrong. anyone else got any idea's? - thanks

Spline counts are the same between auto and manual, just that the rear of the auto and rear of the AX-15 trannies are different enough that I had to tap a Tera machined aluminum seal extension into the rear of my new 32RH auto tranny so my existing 231 that was set up for the previous AX-15 would fit properly.

There's something different that I can't get my arms around, that is for sure.

Yeah that would work for you. Not having a 4:1 in the case makes it real easy to crack and pull the input gear out.
